Using all those hoarded seeds

Ok, I know you WSers have them, it's an addiction. Fess up! lol.

Besides sending them for the newbie projects, what will you do with them all?

I've found a project to use mine for. Yay!

I'm going to make handmade 'seed cards' to send for Christmas. I figure it's not hard and a good way to recycle junk paper as well as maybe giving a few more people the gardening bug. What better to give someone than a card they can stick right in the soil (or pot) in spring and grow something beautiful - and easy - like cosmos, marigold, snaps etc. And they'll think of you ever time they look at them.

I figure I'll use red and green accent colors, since they are for Christmas right now, and I have tons of flowers from my beds pressing at the moment to decorate the fronts with.

I've even printed off a little message card with instructions on how to grow them. I'm such a geek!

So, besides newbie project, what will you do with that mountain of seeds that have been sitting around and you know you'll never have room to grow?

Yeah, I have a ton of seeds too. I'm actually going to sow a lot of them this year. I'm not sending any of them to Bakemom for the newbie seed project, I'm just going to be sending her fresh seeds from my own garden.

I used to be into crafts like the cards you're making. They sound like a really nice touch. But I just don't have the energy or creative urge for it any more. In fact I am in the middle of a purge of all the craft supplies that have taken over the house. I've been giving stuff away on craigslist.

One of the women who came to pick up some things emailed me, and she is coming to visit some time this week to get some of my seeds, as well as some daylilies, bearded iris, Siberian iris, and anything else I have too much of that I can dig up and pass on.

I told her about this forum and a little about winter sowing, but I don't know if she has visited or not.

I love the idea, but be prepared for some of the recipients being somewhat less enthusiastic than you are about planting them!

A few years ago I made a packet of seeds for 3 easy-to-grow annuals that would look good together--castor bean, cleome and cypress vine. I also included descriptions and instructions for growing. I think one or two of my 8 siblings and my mom went ahead and planted them. One sister fell in love with the cypress vine, and plants that every summer. Last week I got an email from a sister saying she had found these seeds in her mudroom and what were they. So she may still use them. It was worth it to me; I enjoyed putting them together, and love that one sister enjoys the vine.

It looks like on the SASE page it says up to 3 months to receive seeds and on the Gardenhoard Facebook page it says she has been swamped with tons of SASE requests and will be sending them all out by the 15th. https://www.facebook.com/GardenHoard and appears you can contact through Facebook & Twitter. Hang in there! Can't complain about Free Seeds, right? Ohh, I just noticed she has Wooly Mullien seeds on her SASE page! Those are cool plants.

Seeds- I habitually try to "hold some over" just in case I do not get the lil ones to grow on- and that is if there is enough to do that with- and I really want to try that plant. There are many more seeds that will keep a high germination rate for years- there are a few though that are best sown fresh- a little research should give you the info you need to know to save or sow. Now- with established plants that I collect seeds from- I try to get those seeds out there to folks who may want to try them. Swaps- Exchanges- and bringing them to other gardeners and garden groups I know. Seedlings- I grow on what I can find room for- and seem to add new beds every year.... But I do offer up MANY MANY seedlings/plants to friends and gardeners and garden groups for their sales- and bring to local exchanges in the spring and fall. It is a good feeling to be able to share what you have with others. And when you can do that on a large scale- well- the feeling is even better! Every year- there are far too many seeds to try- and far too many seedlings to plant- but- there are also many more new people to meet and share the wealth with also. Last year- my sister found a country food shelf that actually wanted all the excess vegi seedlings I started to give to their folks in need. Had I know that was an option open to me- I would have started every vegi seed I had to give to them! As it was- they had a bunch to share around. Last year was the first year that I had plants still in their sowing containers come fall. It was a bit sad to see the lost potential of those that did not get planted soon enough- but- I did get them planted. It is a bit much to be planting out seedlings all summer long- but know you are not alone- there are many of us in this forum who's "eyes" are bigger than their garden beds (look at some spring and summer past posts)... And- there are ways to not be wasteful- Share- Swap- Give- Enjoy! And, if it comes down to it- compost. Natures way of using what was- to give to what will be. My other is a hoarder, my grandmother and aunt are worse. I'm okay, but only because my boyfriend helps alot. Because of growing up in that environment, I can't see messes, dirt or piles. I can really only notice differences. In order to maintain my own house, I try and keep it as sterile as possible. When I have been good for a while, I'll put a few things on the counter that looks nice. Looking nice is my entire motivation for keeping it clean. But if I have a towel on the floor, I can't tell the difference between one towel and six of them until I notice I ran out of towels or its brought to my attention. I notice one dish in the sink, but not all of the dishes in the sink. And I cant see dust until I put something down and it leaves a mark, because it accumulates so slowly. For me, it isn't about wanting to keep things, and I think that most of these people are similar. There are plenty of excuses to avoid drastic change, and some of them include sentimentality. If they give you a reason why they want it, and they give themselves a reason to keep it, than they feel less pressured and more justified in their pattern. Change is terrifying. It is unexpected and unsettling and very hard to emotionally handle, especially when your possessions give you a feeling of security. In order to maintain my home I have to avoid sentimentality as much as possible. So I believe that they leave the place looking sterile in order for the hoarder in question to notice when there is one thing out of place, because once that one thing becomes two things, they can't see anything out of place. It is an incredibly hard concept to follow, but it is a real thing none the less.

mommabird congrats on moving on and doing what you needed for your sons and yourself to get your life back, it's great to hear things are going so well. one thing in your posts really jumped out at me: " " I really do think hoarding is a control issue." as a former hoarder who did get help and learned to overcome the obsessiveness of hoarding, I totally agree that it is about control. I think often what happens is circumstances that make a person feel like they have no control, that could be a job loss, a death in the family, financial problems, poverty, lots of other things that trigger that sense of not being in control in your life. that was very true for me, and the hoarding is like a way to control your surroundings, as long as you control the stuff you feel like you have control over something. one of the greatest feelings though that I wish all hoarders could experience is just letting go, giving up the need to control things and realize that hoarding doesnt improve your life, it doesn't protect you from all the crap that life throws at you and when you learn to let go you get such a sense of freedom from this horrible obsessive behaviour. it's not easy but it can be done and the rewards are so worth it, but I think a lot of hoarders are afraid to try and get the right help but no one can make them face it head on, that has to come from within and just a desire to change and do the hard yards to overcome it. unfortunately though hoarding does affect other people and mostly those who also live in the house, as frankie said above mental illnesses do have that impact, but when a hoarder tries to control everything in your surroundings, it ends up controlling what other family members can or can't do as well. At the end of the day, you realized what is right for you and your kids.

I've been wanting to make some of those cards. Do you have instructions? I haven't been able to figure out how to get the seeds in the paper without them getting wet enough to start germinating until the paper dries.
Any hints?

I share seed packets with my quilting groups, many of whom are also gardeners - I take a basket full of labeled seed packets and an instruction sheet that tells about the plants. I've had lots of nice comments back from them, and especially enjoy hearing from newbies who really aren't into gardening. They get a kick out of starting their own seeds. I've done this for several years now, and I already have people asking when I'll be bringing the seeds.
