PV, any damage from the NYC storms?

I'm especially thinking of PV, but there may be other gardeners who can tell us how the tornadoes affected their gardens. I hope you all fared well with minimal losses. It was quite a shock to hear about the storms, and when I saw the green skies in the videos I knew it had to be very frightening. Later on I read about the number of trees that were lost, how sad.

Hi Mary! No damage in my immediate area; but there are trees down in blocks not very far from me. I believe the weather people said that the weakest of the two tornadoes touched down in Brooklyn. There was extensive damage in other parts of the city, though, and one death that I've heard of.

I was at work when they swirled through; got really dark. By the time I looked up, I could see debris floating about. By the time I got up and went to the window, it was nothing but a white sheet of rain - couldn't see a thing. It didn't last long - but long enough, I guess.

I wouldn't want to be in the path of one of those really big twisters ...

Glad to hear you are okay, PV. That evening was pretty frightening. I'm in Fairfield County, and my husband left Stamford at exactly the wrong time. Watching the news reports (we get NYC stations) all they kept saying about CT was how horrible the rain was over the Merritt Parkway between Stamford and Bridgeport... guess how my DH drives home? Boy, was I glad to see him walk in the door that evening! I can't imagine what it was like to be in the thick of things!

I bet the restaurants loved it though, lol - just think of all those stranded LIRR riders who decided to just go to dinner before they went home, lol Beats sitting for hours in Penn Station!

I am glad we finally got some rain though...

Thanks so much for the advice. Your advices have given me "food for thought." I think I might wait it out until fall and see if it gets anymore growth...maybe, but probably not.I had 2 redbuds when I lived in St.Louis and with all the bad storms we would get there, never had a problem with them.I was so excited when I realized I could grow Redbuds here (SE Minnesota)!Yeah, Toronado, that's what I always liked about the trees is the twisting branches..mind of its own. I'll take a picture and post it tomorrow.

Judy, I have propagated them from cuttings at many different times of the year. The only time that I have had problems of any sort is when they are in full new growth and juicy fluids. At any rate, all you have to do is to make sure that you use a good fungicide like Captan, and you really do need to cut off the leaves. The cut sections will not be able to supply the nutrional needs of leaves. Good luck and please let us know how it works for you! Ann

Thanks Andrew, No damage, just an inch of very much needed rain, no wind at all. My kind of tropical depression. We've been very dry for over two weeks, but the first few days of July had gotten almost 9" of rain. Its "feast or famine" around here lately when it comes to rain. So a low or tropical depression is always welcome! Its the named storms that we're not crazy about.
