My Custom Medium - Up Close & Personal

With the beginning of a new bulb season, there comes the frequently asked questions of what to pot newly purchased bulbs in, and how to avoid rot and fungus issues.

I've mentioned the type of medium I use many times, but I haven't really had photos to go along with my explanations.

I've used a lot of different mediums since starting my bulb collection... regular bagged potting mixes, cocopeat... and I've played around with additives, such as perlite, vermiculite, horticultural charcoal, etc...

But the mix I use now... the mix I am convinced is the healthiest for my bulbs... consists of pine bark pieces, perlite, and granite chips. I will occasionally add a handful of vermiculite, if I have some.

Here's what it looks like...

A handful, so you can get a particle size perspective...

This is Amalfi before re-potting. It's in cocopeat, and as you can see, the level has dropped a lot since I potted it. This tells me that the medium is collapsing.

Here are the roots of Amalfi. They should be way more extensive and healthy.

And here is Amalfi now, re-potted into the new medium.

I use approximately equal parts of pine bark reptile bedding, perlite, and poultry grit granite chips. Other ingredients can be substituted, depending on what you can find locally.

I'll be re-potting more bulbs very soon, and I'll try to take photos of everything I do. If I can help even one person to grow healthy bulbs, then sharing my jungle was all worth it!

And speaking of my jungle... here it is...
