Amaryllis Propagation by division versus offsets
Comments (11)I have tried every thing in the book and out side the book. Propogation by cutting works, result 80 o/o or better if you do not ower water them. They take three years to bloom same as from seeds. Offsets if few may be left with the mother (THEY GROW FASTER;ONLY REPOT THEM IN BIGGER POT).Having left them in situ; seperate and replant when dorment or mid JAN. if you have warm climate and AMARYLLIS does not dorment. To me propogation by cutting/scaling is no fun.You only get more of what you already have. To me real pleasure is in cross breading. You never know what you may get. Some times what you get is far bettrer then what is avaiable at shops and its yours, no one else has it. Comments (5)Dave, I have never tried to sow them directly primarily because they are so light and would easily blow away. I imagine that you could very easily, but they will not do well if they dry out. So, keeping the surface moist will probably be your biggest challenge. However, you could germinate them inside, either in small covered containersor ziploc bags or you could float them in water (make sure the water, then transplant them. I may try that with some of mine this year. I live near the panhandle of Florida, and our climate is about the same. I have left them outside with minimal protection the first year, and most of them did just fine. It just depends on how cold our winter gets. You could always cover them on nights of hard freezes....See Morewhich amaryllis can be propagated?
Comments (25)Hi Windy, Here are a few more interesting crosses from last year. White Christmas X Red Peacock-85 seeds from 1 pod, great germination rate, vigorus seedlings. Picotee X Red Peacock-75 seeds from 1 pod (that is a lot for Picotee)great germinatin, vigorus seedlings. Royal Velvet X Red Peacock-64 seeds from 1 pod. These were some of the largest hippi seeds I've ever seen. Great germination rate, excellent growers & the seedlings have a strong red blush up the reverse of the leaf. There is some controversy attached to Royal Velvet. Some people claim it is sterile, mine is not. It is very possible that there is more than 1 cultivar being sold as Royal Velvet. Picotee X Charisma-76 & 63 seeds per 2 pods. Good germination rate & healthy seedlings. The seedlings seem to be better growers than either parent but I still expect 3-4 years till bloom . Ruby Meyer X LaPaz-A very high yielding cross! I planted out 100 seeds & I think every single one germinated :) Good growers with most having the red blush on the reverse of the leaf from Ruby Meyer. Ruby Meyer X White Christmas-72 seeds,44 with no visible embryo.Out of 28 good looking seeds only 3 germinated. These seedlings are -slow- growers. Pink Floyd X Appleblossom-2 pods with 20 & 27 seeds. 23 had no embryo, out of those planted only 3 germinated.Slow growers. Pink Floyd X Emerald- I didn't record the seed total but I planted 18. I have 11 growing at a decent rate. Emerald-It appeared to set seed but none germinated. Misty-It appeared to set seed but zero germination. Amputo X self-11 seeds,8 terminal albinos. I small seedling left. Amputo X Pink Floyd-10 seeds,1 small seedling left. I intend to cross Pink Floyd & Amputo again. The seedling failure may have been due to severe weather conditions. So far this year Pink Diamond,Honeymoon, Baby Doll,Cupido and Jade Serpent are all holding seed pods. It seems like the smaller South African varities do not want to self pollinate. Only time will tell. Hi Soultan, There is a huge server spam blocking program going on right now. Somebody on your server is a major spammer & it has been blocked by just about every other server out there. There is a chance that you could get email to me with a freebie Yahoo account, sent to my new Yahoo addy. My DH went through several email accounts to try & send to you but everything was rejected :( Lora...See MoreHippeastrum / Amaryllis Propagation help
Comments (4)I have successfully multiplied amaryllis bulbs into 16-18 bulblets. It was done when the bulb was at the end of dormancy, that is, 15 January in Pakistan. The bulb was divided into 16 with a sharp sterile knife, with a part of basal plate attached with the chips. The chips were submerged in antifungus solution for fifteen minutes. Then some clean sand was sterilized by heating and moisted with sterile water. 1/4th of a new transparent polythene bag was filled with this moist sand. The chips were put in the sand with basal plates touching the sand. After blowing air into the bag, it was let resting in a dark place. After about a month you can see small bubls with green leaves emerging from the basal plates. When it swell to the size of a pea, separate them from the chips and plant outdoor. Sometimes, 16 chips will produce more than 16 bulbs....See Morehaweha
