best way to plant amaryllis seeds+best amaryllis book
Comments (17)If you want to grow alot of these you need to start them in open flats. Get some plastic trays from the five and dime. You are looking for something that would double as the bottom of a cat litter box. With about a 1/2 inch wood drill bit put about 12 holes in it. Six of them on the curve of the bottom to side. This is so if sitting flat it won't fill with water. I use a compost soil with a little sand and mix 50% with miracle grow soil or peters which is sold in our area. Fill about an inch from the top and water thoroughly. Add more soil if needed to keep an inch from the top. Lay out seeds flat with about the same space as the seeds are wide. Cover with 1/4 inch of soil mix. Mist top of soil until real wet. Set in semi bright light or on porch but not full sun. After they have had three or four leaves come out strong you can gradually introduce them to more sun. Don't worry about thinning out after they start sprouting. Leave in the tray and fertilize as required. Donts soak and don't let dry out. Leave them in tray for first year, then plant them out or in pots. You will end up with over 50+ a tray and are great for starting a whole bed with one tray. Hoped that helped you some it has worked for us for years. Warning; cats love to lay in these flats of young Amaryllis. Here is a link that might be useful: Town Square...See MoreCan anyone identify these amaryllis?
Comments (27)Sorry, I didn't mean to be so sensitive. I guess I was just having a bad day. In any case, the picture WAS taken in sunlight, and with a low end digital camera at that. I also don't want to " beat a dead horse" but if you want a comparision picture of the same flower (but as I remember, NOT the same exact bloom) you can see one that was taken inside the house, on the kitchen counter under flourescent light, on a ebay listing where I am selling seeds. (I hope that reference doesn't violate the no sell rules; I delibertly did not give the exact reference. If you want it you can privately email me and I will give it to you.) I would guess however, altho I really don't remember, that an automatic flash was used for the inside picture. In the interests of any future situation (and because I can still learn!) can you recommend how one can take a picture and avoid the problem? (Assuming I am using a relatively cheap camera and that camera's are not my thing.) It is in all of our interests that our pictures be as accurate representations as possible! Comments (11)I have tried every thing in the book and out side the book. Propogation by cutting works, result 80 o/o or better if you do not ower water them. They take three years to bloom same as from seeds. Offsets if few may be left with the mother (THEY GROW FASTER;ONLY REPOT THEM IN BIGGER POT).Having left them in situ; seperate and replant when dorment or mid JAN. if you have warm climate and AMARYLLIS does not dorment. To me propogation by cutting/scaling is no fun.You only get more of what you already have. To me real pleasure is in cross breading. You never know what you may get. Some times what you get is far bettrer then what is avaiable at shops and its yours, no one else has it. Ask HANS May you fall in love with this wounder. ARIF...See MorePropagating amaryllis in December
