'direct winter sowing'

Sooo... I had a bunch of impatiens and cosmos return this spring from a tiny few I actually got to start from seed last summer. They obviously spread their seed everywhere in the bed. So I'm thinking... why bother winter sowing in flats? Why not in November, when the squirrels and chipmunks are hopefully done doing their dirty work, spread seeds in the beds, kind of rake them in a bit, spread mulch (which is pretty much what I did last winter in that bed anyway), and see what comes up? I want to do poppy, coneflower, cosmos, impatiens again, and delphiniums (which I find completely impossible to grow from seed so far).

Am I missing something? If the plants came up by themselves, I guess it should work again, right?

If I'm going to try this, should I do it earlier than November? Later? Februrary?
