Great Material: Gray Wood for Winter
The look of gray, weathered wood offers a sophisticated twist on rustic style

Houzz Contributor. After journalism school, I fell into decorating media and immediately discovered a new passion. An Atlanta native, I spent several years as an editor for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine before making the leap to national publications and websites such as Houzz, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Accents. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband and son, who’ve gotten used to coming home and finding the furniture rearranged. When I'm not dragging case goods across the floor, I enjoy good food and wine, college football, music of all kinds, and traveling.

I've always thought gray wood tones feel just right for this time of year. Whether it's pickled, painted, stained or left to weather naturally, the wood evokes a sense of bare branches and pearly winter skies — a completely different direction from the cozy, snuggle-up decorating we often crave during the cold months. Get ideas from eight different takes on this material below.
Striated kitchen cabinets give a sleek kitchen a sense of texture.
The towering gray-wood wall, which follows the line of the cathedral ceiling, gives strong presence to this living area.
Gray wood beams march in step with closet doors — an organic touch in a very modern space.
Deep gray on a deck lends a weathered look. The light-wood-and-white furniture pops nicely against its darker background.
Planks are the last material I'd expect to see in this minimalist bedroom, but the deep gray makes them feel sophisticated and subtle.
The Old West gets a contemporary spin: rough-hewn railings, a longhorn skull as a sculptural accent, and just enough color to keep it from feeling drab.
A clever twist on an accent wall, gray-stained wood adds an appealing layer behind this simple headboard.
A sense of softness pervades this space. The pale gray floor planks, furniture and rug combine for the gentle feel of a misty day.
