Brass garden stakes

I want to make some stained glass garden art. I think it is a bad idea to use copper as the stake part that goes into the ground, since if the brom leaves touch it, it will hurt (kill?) them.

Anyone know if brass is ok in a bromeliad bed?

Brass has a lot of copper in it, so I am going to assume it will be bad for the plants also.
Anyone have and other ideas for a solderable metal that won;t hurt the plants?
What if I tin (cover it with another metal) the brass/copper stakes- that will prevent direct contact......

Hi everyone,

rayandgwenn - I have no experience with brass but I do however know about poisoning from copper as I lost a lot of plants to it when I first started growing brom's. I've also experienced problems with plants when they made contact with new galvanised wire mesh; in this case I think the zinc in the galvanising is what caused the damage.

I have recently read an article about problems with "metals" by Graeme Barclay. This was in "Bromeliad" - (Journal of the Bromeliad Society of New Zealand Inc) Vol.51 No9 in an article called "Growing Tips for Beginners - Part 4.

Graeme writes ......"fungus will often attack a weak spot in a plant where damage to the leaf has occured from such things as sun scorch, cold spotting or heavy metal poisoning. As mentioned in part 2, bromeliads do not like ANY contact with treated timber and also exposure to copper and zinc, where the smallest doses can cause severe burning to leaves. Secondly, always ensure any water run-off from treated timber, galvanised shelving and nails etc. does not land on plants below."

I would imagine that because brass is normally a composition of copper and zinc. More specifically it is usually 68.5% to 71.5% copper, .07% lead, .05% iron with the remaining ingredient being zinc, it would react on the plants in a similar way. We all know the dangers of lead to humans and as solder contains lead, this may well be harmful to plants as well.

The only definite way of knowing how harmful the metals you intend to use in this garden art are, is to allow a plant (one that is surplus to your requirements) to make contact with the object and see what eventuates.

Thanks, everyone...we had fun making these "starlight" garden stakes...to answer your questions: We put $10 on them...don't know if that is too high or not...figure we have about $3 in them...so will see. FM was pretty slow (the first one yesterday of the season)...it was cold, windy & just not a nice day. We didn't sell any of these "starlighters" but we did sell a few recycled t.v. antenna "mini-deco bdhse" that my DH made from scrap wood & a broken tree branch (see below)...we'll try the "starlighters" a few more wks when more people come browsing You know, with HD TV and satellite dish, we no longer needed an antenna...so DH took it apart...cut some small logs off a branch & scraps for roof...I drilled a small hole & glued in a bit of pot liner stuff on front & glued pcs. tog....tah dah! (these sold at $4 ea) nana...the green fence stakes fit inside the white metal rails (each 5/8")...DH pounded them in a bit. concrete...for wood rails, my DH drills a hole & then adds a metal rod...that way, the wood rail is out of the dirt! Your totems are truly lovely.....and I own that exact set of 'ma and pa' cups with the saucers as hats....they belonged to my mother who passed away several years ago. I have always thought they were just so unique but I do not think I will ever put them in the yard since I know for a fact that they are at least 50 years old, if not more.... I wish I could find the goodies you guys seem to find at GS and TS etc....all I seem to find is literal junk or common everyday cast aways... I have been searching for going on a year for unique pieces for totems and plate flowers..... guess I will just have to keep on looking, lol...... keep up the great work !!

Thanks Kat! Joshua is my angel, the light and joy of my life (most of the time lol) The red heart is a clear glass heart that my hubby cut out for me. I used clear silicon as the adhesive. First of all I used copper wire through the center and had enough overhang to make a loop from where it would be hung and added some beads. I also made a heart out of the copper wire and glued that on too. I then glued the red glass on and used glass frit in the gaps instead of grout. You can buy glass frit from art glass shops. I just use the bamboo ones, with twist ties on a roll. I bought lots of stem supports a few years ago (vinyl coated wire with a spiral at the top), but those proved not strong enough to hold the weight of a lily once the buds get large. I had some 4 footers last year, which did need staking. Actually I stake almost all the lilies.
