Fungus problem? Ruined all my mysticas

I noticed one by one the beautiful foliage of my Penstemon mysticas were dying. It is not rabbits. I dug three up - all at different times - (as one died, then other, etc.) and each had white fungus at the roots.

I've never had this kind of problem. If there was any type of fungus, it never killed anything in my garden.

I did have a huge mound of each Penstemon (HOS) and maybe the roots were crowded (as you can tell, I am still learning about gardening - so bear with me).. could that have caused the problem? Yet, I've HOS many perennials and never had a problem with "overcrowding"...

I don't have a ready spray for whatever it is - can I use peroxide - although I believe the plants are pretty much gone.

Thanks
