digging holes in lawn

magnetogram

now i'm digging in the back yard. i am going to plant plumeria on the lawn next year. i thought i'd test one out this winter. my lawn is fairly nice. one would think that the soil is good.

well, i start digging. soil's too hard so i water. (trying to kill grass perhaps...) on thing i noticed before watering is that the chunks of soil are very, very hard. okay, no problem. just add water. well, i add water. oh no! the water isn't draining fast enough. i scoop out a handful of mud. i was hoping that it would just ooze through my fingers. instead, i find that i'm playing with wet play-doh. CLAY!!! this is the same soil that ooze forth earthworms when it's saturated. i guess the grass likes the clay or maybe the soil just has the right nutrients.

where do i go from here? i had originally planned to just add some soil conditioner (i.e. compost). now, i guess i need to add some sand and silt.

any suggestions?

thanks,

detrick
