Photo-self sown black eyed susie weed whacker garden

Even in our lousy soil, a few things grow really well.

We have a lot of wild black eyed susans growing. This year I went after a large bank of them with a weed whacker and bashed out the grasses - leaving as many of the black eyed susans as possible.

I weed whacked twice more during the growing season and watered twice. This is what we have now:

In the next two years I want to get echinacea and gallardia established like this. The plan is to strip back the weeds as much as possible, plant out great HOS with their clumps of rich soil attached, babysit things for the first few months, and then let things progress as weed whacker gardens.

I might have a trade or two of black eyed susie seed available this fall for folks who need some. :)
