OOOOO...what have you ordered so far!?

So the catalogs are out and since I have over 70 named varieties...I was really picky over ordering this season (so far...everyone knows I go "mad" when the big sales hit!). I have ordered Pink Nymph, Pink Surprise, Bellisimo, Trention, Alfresco, Rembrant van Rijn, and Ruby Myer. I have "surprises" coming...even though I know what they are...from another lister and have made arrangements for sending off lots of San Antonio Rose bulb (and a few offsets of others (President Johnson and Nightstar) and a Benfica bulb) to other listers who requested them earlier this year (no more available so please don't ask). I think McClure Zimmerman is sending a replacement Elvas and they own me for that Lilac Wonder that ended up being San Remo. I will remind them!!

I am sooooo excited that it won't be long before people start posting their first blooms of the season!!

Oh,...and I'm adding Rozetta and some new ragtimes to the mix too-- I'll score those from the venerable Alana who has fallen into a serious case of CHAD.

Indoors about a month ago I sowed Mary Washington asparagus in cells, have about 18 seedlings (ca. 75-80% germination), about 6 to 9 inches tall. Couple pots of parsley and thyme were sown at same time and are couple inches tall. Bought one of those plastic clam shells of organic rosemary for $2.49 and stripped the stems apart and rooted in water. Now I have 9 four-inch baby plants, sure beats starting rosemary from seed and waiting forever. Sowed hot and sweet peppers in cells two days ago, also three varieties of tomatoes (some tom seed was nine years old, but it sprouted OK last year...!) Next on the indoor agenda, maybe: chard, kale, scallions, leeks, bok choy. Also maybe lettuces and spinach. Outdoor garden is covered with a foot of frozen compacted snow here in mid-Hudson Valley, so my unheated enclosed porch will have to be a surrogate for the cool-weather crops.

- 22 tomatoes planted out (1 each of Cherokee Chocolate, Omar's Lebanese, White Rabbit, BFG Dark Horse, BFG Nirvana, Gold Medal, Kellogg's Breakfast, Black Krim, BFG Mad Hatter, Amish Paste, Stupice, Persimmon, Shady Lady, Monica, Bobcat, Sunsugar, 6 Sungold) - 20 tomatoes still in their seed starters because I got a really late start (Cherokee Purple, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Isis Candy, Striped German, San Marzano 2, Snow White, plus a tomatillo) - lemon cucumbers (10) - bush beans, Blue Lake (18 - admittedly, not enough, and the slugs will probably get more than I do at this rate) - eggplant, Ichiban (4) - radishes, Reggae and German Giant (45 and 22, respectively, planted as an experiment to see if they'll bulb up with the weather warming up...plus I just wanted something green and fast growing in between the tomatoes) - pineapple tomatillos (3) - garlic chives - pattypan squqsh, Early White Bush (7 - I seeded them all and couldn't bear to let them die, so I stuffed them in where I thought they might fit) - zucchini, cocozelle (4) - pole beans, Kentucky Wonder (70 or so?? I'm not sure... probably too cramped, but they have big teepees to climb up) - Sweet Banana pepper - Habanero pepper - Green Bell pepper - Anaheim pepper - Ancho/poblano pepper - Jalapeno peppers (2 - overwintered from last year, so I don't know if they'll produce at all) - Thai dragon peppers (1 - but overwintered along with the jalapenos, so again, not sure if they'll produce, since the foliage is still just coming in) - kale, lacinato (leftover from this winter, and it hasn't died or bolted yet, so it gets to stay) - collards, vates (same issue as the kale. I had one plant last from late spring last year and into spring this year, so I'll cross my fingers for this one!) - Herbs: mint, oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil, catnip, large leaf parsley I'm waiting on my Tromboncino and Burgess Buttercup squash to germinate, and I'd like to start some Chinese long beans, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Oh, and I'm expecting this to all fit in 144 sq. ft. of raised beds and countless plastic storage totes. Other than the tomato seedlings, everything is planted out, so I just need room for 20 more tomatoes... LOL!

So what have you killed so far this year?

Did we have a worse winter than usual for zone 5? My 1 yr sweet autumn clematis hasn't returned. Another established clematis, type 3, didn't return. If it's Venosa Violacea I'm going to be upset, I have to check my garden "map". My container spruce, which I wrap well each year and made sure to water during warmer temps is really brown. My 2 year Fothergilla Major Mt. Airy died. My 1st year Willow Hakuro Nishiki looks completely dead. My 3rd year Golden Spirit died back to the snow line, but this didn't happen in prior years. My "Grace" came back a real winner, no dieback at all. My Sombreuil Rose bush, which I usually bury the crown, wrap in burlap and cover each winter, though the only thing I did this past winter was cover the crown and nothing more, returned with very little dieback to my amazement. Better than any other year. Go figure. Some hostas, which I was warned last year after purchasing that they aren't hardy, never to be seen again. Some groundcover sedum which probably never had a chance to establish -- nothing. Also lost a Weigela My Monet, thankfully still under warranty. Very Bad year!!!! Oh, and don't fret about the Asters. I had several varieties and they've all disappeared. I suspect it's the rabbits.

So how many flats do you have on the go so far?

I have about 6 or 7 flats started and mostly doing well. I have 28 tomato plants just put into separate pots (3 varieties: Black Krim, Iidi and Padova). Also, there are 3 flats of coleus, one flat with cuttings from last year's favourites and the other 2 with new seedlings. I'm trying for ones with a lot of yellow in the leaves but not having much luck. But I do have one rather small and weak one with almost completely black leaves. Probably the colour is why it's not growing very fast (not enough chlorophyl),but it seems healthy. I also have lots of baby primulas of 3 kinds. Two sets are in the cold frame as they are from last year, and the others are auriculas from this year. I got the seeds from France and had quite poor germination so I'm watching the plants I did get really closely. For unusuals, I have seedlings of things I collected in parks and nurseries locally. They didn't care if I collected seeds, so I went wild! Now I have red yuccas, pineapple lilies, phormiums, pearly whites (a local wildflower) and eryngium agavafolium.I also have 3 different kinds of penstemons, but while growing, they're very slow and tiny. Let's hope at least some of them survive!

I'm with you, Ryan. My list of "gets" will be significantly shorter if Willow Creek/Easy to Grow doesn't fix the issue to Hatta's satisfaction. I've got a pretty large order placed with ETG already, but I won't hesitate to cancel it and go elsewhere.

hmmm - does "venerable" mean old?!!!

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to my first fall order in this new passion, and I am trying to limit my selections to a manageable number - as much for space as for total cost. Of the things I've ordered, though, I'm excited to be getting Pink Floyd the most, and a jumbo Rilona. And of course the Rozetta and Ragtime score is pretty exciting. Alana

Venerable:

1. commanding respect because of great age or impressive dignity; worthy of veneration or reverence, as because of high office or noble character: a venerable member of Congress.
2. a title for someone proclaimed by the Roman Catholic Church to have attained the first degree of sanctity or of an Anglican archdeacon.
3. (of places, buildings, etc.) hallowed by religious, historic, or other lofty associations: the venerable halls of the abbey.
4. impressive or interesting because of age, antique appearance, etc.: a venerable oak tree.
5. extremely old or obsolete; ancient: a venerable automobile.

In Rocky Mountain Ryan's defense, I'm going to point out definition #1, with an emphasis on the "or impressive dignity". I'm quite confident in my assumption that that was what he meant by venerable.

Beyond that, well Ryan, buddy, I think you just stepped in it! ;-)

Nice picks everyone. I've only ordered from two places so far. Easy to grow bulbs (Siren & Snow Drift) and Edens Blooms (Bright Spark, Cupido, Santa Rosa, Green Dragon, Lemon Sorbet, and a new Germa) for I've killed the poor sucker :(
