Tree selection for backyard - please help

I'm considering planting a southern live oak - possibly the heritage variety - in my backyard, but I'm unsure about some things. They are evergreens, but I think someone said they leave a fair amount of leaf litter. Some say this tree grows slow (which is fine for me in this case), but some of what I have read indicates a more moderate to fast growth. Do these grow slower or faster than an Indian Rosewood (or sissoo tree)? Can I plant this tree near (3-4 ft. away)a curbed lawn area or will the roots most likely heave up the curbing and cause lawn problems? Can I plant this tree approx. 12-15 ft. from pool motor equipment and approx. 30 ft. from a pool? Another tree I was considering for this area is the bay tree (as in bay leaves you cook with)or the sissoo. Thanks for your help
