I don't think there would be any problem with putting up a trellis or attaching it to the fence. As for pruning, I think I heard that roses are supposed to be pruned in the spring, so I'm not sure about that. I found this at gardening.about.com: "Timing is determined by the class of the rose plant and the hardiness zone in which it is growing. Most rose pruning is done in the spring, with the blooming of the forsythia as a signal to get moving. If you don't have forsythia, watch for when the leaf buds begin to swell on your rose plants, meaning the bumps on the canes get larger and reddish in color. Hybrid tea roses are the most particular about pruning. If you don't know what type of rose you have, watch the plant for a season. If it blooms on the new growth it sends out that growing season, prune while dormant or just about to break dormancy, as stated above. Perfectly normal, friesjm. Young trees will drop most if not all of their fruit in order to put more energy into developing their leaf canopy. I would recommend searching our forum for either "511 mix" or "gritty mix" for your potting medium, both are good choices. If you can find Farfad bagged mix in your area, there are a couple of good choices in their line up, again, search our forum for "Farfad" for those choices. Miracle Gro Potting Mix has very small fines, and can compact over time, not permitting good draining, and drowning the roots. And, you'll want to fertilize your Improved Meyer probably a bit more often, or with slightly more concentrated solution, as they sure love their fertilizer. Most container folks have used Dyna Gro's Foliage Pro along with some Osmocote Plus (must be the "Plus" formulation as it contains the micronutrients). Patty S. During the warm months, I grow mine outdoors in full sunlight. When they're actively growing, they do best in as much sunlight as you can provide for them. If they don't get it, their newer leaves will droop and look limp. In full sunlight, they arch up and out, with a perky, graceful curve to them. When the temperature starts to drop in the fall, I scale back on watering. If the days are still warm enough, I'll place them outside, bringing them back in at night when the temperature gets below 50ºF. When the days get too cold, I just keep them inside fulltime from then on. I also cut back significantly on watering, letting them practically dry out completely. Don't get any water in the central crown of the leaves, this could lead to them rotting out. Outdoors, I don't worry about this at all. Only when they're indoors. If you water it too much during the winter months, your ponytail palm will try growing new leaves, which will become limp and flat because of the lower light levels. They'll do just fine in a shaded location. I keep mine on a glass table that only gets minimal light and it doesn't phase them one bit. Just remember to keep them on the dry side, or else they will try growing. Other than that, they'll gladly tolerate a low light, shaded location during the winter. In other words, during the summer months, I keep them in full sunlight and water them quite often. During the winter months, I bring them back indoors, place them on display on my glass table and practically forget about them until Spring. You can see in the photo, the table isn't even next to a window. They only get minimal indirect light all winter long and they do just fine. Oh yeah, one more thing, the tips of the leaves sometimes turn brown. If they do, don't trim them, because it'll just die back some more again.

Did you mention where you live? (Good idea is to put general location and/or growing zone next to your name...) Yes, Sempervivums could be grown indoors but usually they don't look their best. I am not sure if they are better off with having to spend winter outside (some plants have to have x number of cold days to grow well); unless you get them really good light during winter they usually look quite sad. During summer it may not make that much difference. But amount of light is always less indoors than outdoors. But if you don't have access to garden or deck-balcony, you have to just do it indoors. Many ppl have to, living in apartments without balcony or any other outdoor space. All of the succulents need lots of light otherwise they stretch as I already mentioned about Painted lady. I use lots of supplemental lighting in winter, and probably will improve even more next winter. here is same Echeveria purpusorum, still indoors (March) and blooming, under lights: Adding more perlite definitely helps.
