Question about winter sown plants

I have some Hollyhocks that I winter sowed and for reasons including weather, I did not get them planted. They are doing well, I've re potted them. Will they be okay during winter in pots or should I plant them in fall, I have that option. Please advise.

I prefer fall plantout. Others have had success overwintering in pots with some protection, but my plants do best in the ground.

I'd get them in the ground, too. Of course bakemom and I are a zone colder than you.

Thanks for the concern over my plants PVick. I can see my pretty budded out weeping cherry tree right next to the kitchen window. It is hung with ice drips then adorned with snow. I have no hope I'll get to enjoy those blossoms this spring. But what I did cover should be fine (fingers crossed). Glad I went to the trouble, my friend didn't cover anything and I am feeling bad for her. Carrie, I saw on TV that you were having a lot of rain, even tornado reports no? If your area is really dry perhaps the rain will soak in as soon as the rain stops. How long is it supposed to rain? Hope it all turns out okay for your gardens. Just stepped outside and took pictures of the ice hanging in my trees. Looks like a beautiful winter wonderland that would be appropriate in January! I know Deanna, the weather here in Kansas is unpredictable all the time. We have all the extremes of weather. If it's actively growing now, you should be able to root it. Take a two liter container and cut it in half just like you would for wintersowing. Put some sterile soil in there with good drainage. Cut the top part of the plant making sure you have two leaf nodes to stick in the soil. Strip off all but the top leaves. Stick it and cover with the top of the two-liter. Put it in a bright, but indirect spot in the house. It should root in 4-8 weeks. Keep moist. Oh, and you will need the cap for this. Sterile medium is very important. But I have found that new growth is sometimes too soft and will rot. You might have better luck if you wait until it is hardened off outside.

Just_me: Last year was my first year, and I put my containers in several spots, some being in full sun, just to see what worked best. The containers didn't care where they were, they all grew equally. The only difference I found was that the ones in full sun dried out a lot quicker, and if I didn't either take the top off during the day if it got too warm they fried. I too would wait until they get their first true leaves. They will be a little stronger come plant out time. Good luck!

You two are making me start to panic!!I can't believe it is nearly the end of February and I haven't started sowing yet. We were away for most of January, then I came home to a sick child and spent the first half of the month nursing him back to good health. On Friday I went to Walmart - no seed starter. I remembered seeing some Pro-Mix at Canadian Tire and went there - no seed-starter except some small bags by Miracle-Grow which I never buy, but at least there is no fertilizer in it. Today I brought in my containers from the garage so I should be able to do some sowing tomorrow. Of course I am still doing trades. Wish me luck!!

I'm in Zone 8, and mine do better in the ground, too.

Sometimes I just do not have a bed ready to put plants in the ground so I sink the pot in my veg beds for the winter. They do just fine. I know I could plant them but then I would need to pot them up in the spring so I can use my veg bed. In the spring I pull the pots out of the ground so I can prepare my veg beds for early veggies. It is usually later before I can dig up lawn for new beds.

This year I have added another holding bed and am working on several other beds so hopefully all my plants will be in the ground before winter,

I'm afraid I don't have any seeds to trade this year, but maybe some Columbine, or yarrow. Will have to get going if I plan to WS again.
It was certainly a great feeling last year receiving all the seeds from wonderful people. It was my first winter sowing experience and I enjoyed it.
