Canadian Winter Sowing

More winter sown planting today...anyone else?

Finally got going again on my winter sowing! I sowed:

-siberian iris

-burgundy gallardia

-Summer Sun heliopsis

-Fatal Attraction echinacea

-Magnus echinacea

-Sunset echinacea

-siberian wallflower

-pink & white baby's breath

-La Fleur Lilac datura

-Firecracker allium

-digitalis lutea

-dwarf pink,double black & pink/pink eye hollyhocks

-lupin fabacea

-pink lupin

-Lucifer crocosmia

-pulsatilla vulgaris

-Jasione laevis (Shepherd's scabiosa)

-thrift

-dianthus

-blue flax

-Summer Nights delphinium (short)

I am pleased with todays sowing...have visions of everything blooming...sweet dreams! Tomorrow is another day...I just know there are more seeds that need to be sown! How about you??

Northerner, loads of time left to winter sow! I still have lots to do here also! I feel panic when I see on the Winter Sown site that people in warmer zones are planting out...and then I realize that we still have so much time before we can actually plant out. I hope to do more winter sowing this weekend and then do annuals in late March/early April. Good luck with your winter sowing!!! and have fun. Let us know how you make out!

Thanks for the concern over my plants PVick. I can see my pretty budded out weeping cherry tree right next to the kitchen window. It is hung with ice drips then adorned with snow. I have no hope I'll get to enjoy those blossoms this spring. But what I did cover should be fine (fingers crossed). Glad I went to the trouble, my friend didn't cover anything and I am feeling bad for her. Carrie, I saw on TV that you were having a lot of rain, even tornado reports no? If your area is really dry perhaps the rain will soak in as soon as the rain stops. How long is it supposed to rain? Hope it all turns out okay for your gardens. Just stepped outside and took pictures of the ice hanging in my trees. Looks like a beautiful winter wonderland that would be appropriate in January! I know Deanna, the weather here in Kansas is unpredictable all the time. We have all the extremes of weather. Oh dear, the news is on and they are predicting another snowstorm Monday night into Tuesday. Is there no end to this madness? Trowelgal

It's amazing but my wintersowing is coming out just right with my space! I almost killed myself last weekend planting out little sprouts. The only place I have left is half the berm I put up around the new well house and a swath through my shade garden. And I've got two kinds of celosia growing to fill the berm and three containers of columbine and twelve containers of coleus (plus red ones I am rooting on the kitchen windowsill from a last year plant) for the shady areas. It's going to fit perfectly! I am so excited. Almost all of the little wintersowed babies are growing at an astounding rate now that they are in the ground. One exception is the red Flanders poppies. But they are in the worst bed - practically no dirt...just mulch. No wonder the little dears can't get started! I think I'll add some good soil around them and see if it will "trickle down." Thank you, Trudi! For coming up with this delightful method. And thank you, ALL, for your encouragement and answers to silly questions all these months. I am really hoping the for the best growing season yet!

I appreciate your kind offer - I already have tons of catmint because it does so well in my area (near Albuquerque New Mexico) but went on a winter sowing frenzy in March and the catmint was part of it. I have since divided some of the bigger ones I have and tried a few different varieties from Bluestone Perennials. I'll bet there are people out there who would love to have the plants, though.

...and I would plant them out! Those are all cool season crops. If you have enough, you could try planting a few out. Once you start planting, it is important to keep them watered until they settle in. That was the hardest part when I started planting, keeping up with the watering. We should be getting rain this week, so, that is good news. When I wintersowed, I planted as soon as they had leaves, real leaves :) You will be amazed by their roots.

On Sunday I did 3 different Foxgloves in 7 containers and at the end threw all the seeds in together in an eight container. :O) Got lots more to do but waiting for the -20C weather to pass through.

You two are making me start to panic!!I can't believe it is nearly the end of February and I haven't started sowing yet. We were away for most of January, then I came home to a sick child and spent the first half of the month nursing him back to good health. On Friday I went to Walmart - no seed starter. I remembered seeing some Pro-Mix at Canadian Tire and went there - no seed-starter except some small bags by Miracle-Grow which I never buy, but at least there is no fertilizer in it. Today I brought in my containers from the garage so I should be able to do some sowing tomorrow. Of course I am still doing trades. Wish me luck!!

I planted a few spinach seeds in a ceramic planter last weekend. I covered them with old windshield washer containers and watered them in.

Currently, it's -20C going to -25C overnight, the last 3 cm of 10 cm of snow is still blowing around in gentle breeze. There is lots of time left for winter sowing. :) I'm thinking that when my potting soil thaws, it will be a good time to get serious about planting.
