Going to Maui - what have you brought back to Arizona?

Hi Folks,

Heading to Maui soon! What have you legally or illegally brought back to Arizona? Any must have plants, seedlings?

Any must see gardens, nurseries, lush areas to check out?

You have to bring back Plumeria if you can... :)

Chicago90 I've been to Maui nine times. First, is this your first trip? Where are you staying? I have a very wonderful place to stay. I have lots of information for you and will organize it tomorrow... BUT! as far as gardening goes.... concentrate on the UpCountry. That's where the 'people' live. More later.

Josh - I bought 4 from the Home Depot in Corona, off the 15 freeway not too long ago. One is blooming beautiful red with yellow center and fruity coconut scent. The 2nd one has an inflo and I can't wait to see what it will be. The other 2 is a nice size plant and am confident it's not Celedine. But at $8.49, I could not resist. The soil they use is very fast draining so you don't have to worry about over watering or root rot. If it appears wrinkled to you, it needs more water. And since I don't know how well it is rooted(unless I can see it through the drain holes), what I've been doing this season is to set my newly acquired plants (pot and all) in another pot that is 3/4 filled with potting soil and water as usual. The roots in the existing pot will continue to grow downward searching for water. In a short time the existing potted plumeria will be filled with roots. When I am comfortable with the root growth, then I will re-pot. And do keep the pot away from block walls. Remember the Inland Empire heat is great for bringing out vivid colors in plumeria, but at the same time it can be very brutal...yikes!! Also, not all Home Depots keep the same plumeria inventory. So don't dismiss what you see in the outside garden section as being just "common one". A Scott Pratt and Aztec Gold can be had out there. So please, just because it's wrinkled, don't assume it's getting root rot and pull it out for inspection. Good luck to you Josh and happy growing. ~Kasie

wizard, I just wanted to say I have a 6 year old Dell, and though I can no longer extend the warranty (could only get it for 5 years), the last 2 years I had what was called Gold Support. I'm not sure if I paid extra for that over wwhat it would have normally cost for years 4 and 5, but with the Gold Support, my repair call was to be answered in 5 minutes....and it always was. Additionally, other than the initial repair call to tech support which was overseas (India I think) all the later calls were to US tech folks. LMK if you ever want me to check for a US repair # for you. My one and only call to India was a disaster and drove me nuts. Additionally, since having the Gold Warranty for years 4 and 5, I am entitled to tech support for the life of the computer.

OMG! I'm going to Italy! Help! What would you bring back!?!

I brought back truffle oil, garden seeds, olive oil and wine. Italian seed packets are huge. Also, they add nothing to the weight and bulk of your luggage. The olive oil and wine were from a vineyard/olive grove tour. Four bottles were packaged for travel. Bologna is the main objective for my next trip to Italy. From what I've learned, it has the food I would most enjoy in all of Italy. That should be quite wonderful, since all the food I ate on my trip to the region around Florence was wonderful. For a month after that trip, I tried to duplicate those dishes on a daily basis. I did quite well for a while but now the memory needs refreshing. I need another trip. Mementos to bring home would be a low priority for me. The live experience is what's important -- the meals, the wine, the sights, the creature comforts which are abundant and essential to Italian life. They can't be packaged. The glass and pottery are beautiful though. I would probably shop for one of those serving bowls. Also, Italian shoes are the finest. Have a great trip. Jim

I also came via google searches in Feb for information on a kitchen reno that I wanted, but had never done any research on before we started tearing out cabinets! I panicked when I realized that what had started as tearing out wall cupboards over a peninsula had morphed into a total gut of my kitchen down to the studs, and I didn't know what I wanted to put back. Before I started reading here, I just figured I would put everything back the way it had been (without the overhanging cabinets which I hated!), but all the advice and information has led me to believe that I can do something different. I just need to figure out what. I have not done any remodeling before, and I have always felt like I don't have a creative bone in my body! I have an eat in kitchen (13 x 16) with 3 doorways (one leading to the only bathroom on the main floor) and 2 windows, a limited budget (will live with current appliances and probably RTA cabinets) and a husband that is handy, but hates carpentry. I have posted a couple questions, but as others have said, had little response, so have just kept reading. I am trying to post more often, but it is hard to give advice when you don't know what you are doing! I expect I will be here a long time, as I find this all fascinating and have already learned lots!

Arizona has the strictest regs re bringing back plants from Hawaii. I lived in Hawaii my entire life until moving here three years ago. If you would like the phone number in Hawaii for the Ag Station to check the restrictions, let me know. sam

There's all sorts of prepackaged/Ag OK'd plants you can bring back! Hibiscus, coconut palms, gingers, plumeria, orchids, helaconias, etc and all sorts of seeds!
You wouldn't believe all the plants and seeds I mailed home to myself (and I'm talking stuff I collected, not Ag OK'd). I'm a bad bad boy. Don't tell anyone.... ;-)

Hello,
You might look into visiting Kula (Protea and antheriam (sp?)) in the Up Country and Haiku (orchids grow in the trees), a very lush, tropical, small town. Both have numerous nurseries and gardens. And don't forget the resorts. I like the planting and ambience at Hyatt at Kaanapali. Ritz and Kapalua are nice also. You are sooooo fortunate. Will you be there for Halloween? Lahaina has a FABULOUS Halloween on the Main Street (Honoapiilani - sp?)

We are headed to Maui too, in January to stay at the Grand Wailea. This is all good info for me too, and I will hopefully be bringing back or mailing myself some plants as well. I am particularly interested in plumeria.

I brought back:
7 varieties of plumeria
3 varieties of passionflower
Spanish moss
4 varieties of trees (including palm and monkeypod)
various bromeliads for my frog tanks
4 varieties of ginger
seeds galore, including sensitive plant (biophytum sensitivum)
Dragon fruit cuttings (pitaha)
Um, a bunch more stuff that I cannot remember.
Hawaii is awesome. If you can figure a way, try to get some 'rapoza' mango, grafted. I know there was one nursery in Kauai growing it, but they werent ag certified to ship to AZ. If you can find some, let me know, Ill gladly cover any costs associated with bringing it in. Shipping to AZ is problematic. Ag inspection (if it still exists. Ive not found any of my packages opened), temp differential, and high costs can make shipping not cost effective. If you want to plant something into soil that comes from Hawaiian soil, make sure that you grow it on raised benches for at least 6 mos, and look for and eliminate through whatever means any nematodes. If youre an experienced gardener, you will probably be successful using any one of the numerous nematode eliminating practices. Otherwise, just stick with cuttings, seeds and pre-packaged plants.
