Got a bee skep for Christmas, do I just
Comments (9)With all the mites going around, I doubt a bee colony would inhabit a skep since so many cavities are now vacant in the trees. And a skep placed near the ground would almost certainly not house anything more than a mouse. Furthermore, as pointed out above, it is illegal to have bees in a skep. However, one placed a little above the ground could house some wasps, if you are a mind to house them. I use last year's gourds that the birds are done with for wasp nests. If the bottom is taken out, and the top is hung in a tree, almost all will have a wasp nest by mid-summer. Wasps are carnivorous and eat many kinds of flies and mosquitos, so if you can get a wasp to live in there, it is a good thing. Otherwise, enjoy it as a garden ornament and put some mesh across the entrance to prevent its use as a mouse house....See MoreThe decorating treadmill
Comments (44)A book with beautiful photographs that might help you to get off the "decorating treadmill" is No Compromise Decorating by Lynette Jennings (2004). It is an insightful look into the decorating mistake many of us make: compromising what we really want for a trend or a quick fix. Here is an excerpt: "Always celebrate the connection of your home to your life; don't apologize for it, and don't compromise. Home isn't a look, it's a feeling. A place where memories are made and legacies are formed. That said, why would we for one second hesitate to make choices based on anything but what our heart desires? Why would we even for an inkling be distracted by a new product display, a neighbor's comment, or a 'dream home' featured on TV or in a magazine other than for the inspiration it provides? Call it conviction, stubbornness, determination. To eliminate the pressure. The fear of decision. To dig for the courage to live how and with what makes us happy. That's decorating without compromise." Life is too short to compromise. Surround yourself with colors and objects that bring YOU joy....See MoreWhat's the Most Radical Decorating Thing You've Done?
Comments (39)Love Bee's black ceiling and the painted bathroom floor. I've made some departures, for me, in going with a new chandelier for my dining room that has a lot more crystal than anything I ever thought I would like, and I love it. Then I put a large, contemporary crystal chandelier (a disc, basically) in the master bedroom. Love it. Painted the dining room blue when everyone else was going red. My appetite is ruled by what is on the plate, and if that doesn't stimulate an appetite, why eat it? Not one person has refused to eat because it wasn't painted red. But it is a calm environment, so maybe there is less digestive upset after? ;-) Probably my most different thing was selecting three cabinet finishes and door styles for my kitchen when two was not often done. I have two hardware finishes and styles, two faucet finishes, two counter tops -- and it doesn't look wild at all. We also reduced the doorways on one wall from three to two and used the space to put a hutch with fridge drawers and a counter for our espresso machine in the breakfast room. Normally, I would not close an exterior door, but we had one into the garage right next to one to the driveway and another to the driveway at the other end of the counter run. We think we corrected a builder blunder. My porch was painted blue, but it has faded and now that it is time to repaint, I'm going to go darker....See MoreDecor for our MBR suite
Comments (28)Thanks, MLWeaving. I do like SeaSalt, too. Or maybe I am thinking of the Kind Bars; have you had the new Sea Salt ones. Oh they are so good. Of course, it is pretty much a candy bar when you get down to it. But I digress. Eandhl, I like those lanterns, but the pendants are my attempt to mix things up a bit. SueB, That's a great chair, just the kind of thing I am looking for.Too funny about the Tesla's. Clearly we were separated at birth; too many coincidences. Geokid, Thanks for the photo and the link. I want to use these old rugs lying around and its helpful to see an image of them in a coastal-feeling home. Thanks, Atkillery! Outside, hmm, grey, I like that idea. I cannot do another all white bathroom. One thing that I didn't make clear enough was that I was hoping to use both rugs ... one in the room with the bed, one in the adjoining dressing/tub room. I am trying to go for the insouciant, eclectic, "oh, this old thing?" look. But I have to say, nothing is sending me and I keep waffling. I realize that on past projects I have either had a very clear vision, or was blatantly copying something (once, subconsciously!). I have looked at every bedding source I can think of and nothing interests me. I was looking at Madeline Weinrib for throw pillow ideas, and wondered over to her rugs. I've always liked them (me and everyone else). Maybe I should just plunk one of these down and take it from there? A 6x9 between the bed and the french doors to the deck, and a 4x6 centered on the tub?...See Morevmarcos68
