here I am ...stuck in the middle having to hose!!!

Weather man promised, he promised...whaa...whaaaa....whaa

I'll be okay, really I will. I'm just having a moment. Nothing a good red wine and a crank of the air conditioning can't fix.

I have been singing the same song all spring and summer.

Going to be spending the morning dragging the hose around again. I am moving 'installing rain barrels' higher up on the priority list. :-)

I can relate too.

But the drought wouldn't be so awful if it just wasn't so hot. Today is to be our cool day- only 93 degrees. Then in a couple of days we go back to the upper 90s. 99 by Wed! But really it doesn't seem to make much difference once it's over 90.

Our rain deficit is over 8 inches.

What I said was indeed accurate. There were millions involved in the clinical trials of polio vaccines. You're right that vaccines *usually* don't have such a large test size, but polio was an exception. "As far as the viral cause of polio, well, yes, but what triggers the paralysis? Polio was endemic before the introduction of the vaccine. Everyone was infected by early childhood. And yet poliomyelitis was rare before the modern age." That's because the virus is transmitted through the fecal-oral route -- with a twist. Like how chicken pox is less virulent the younger you are infected, the same is true with polio. The oldest clear reference to poliomyelitis is in a 3,000 year old Egyptian stele. Historically, due to poor sanitation (which led to outbreaks of many diseases, like cholera), almost every infant would be exposed with poliovirus. If it was symptomatic, they simply died, without the cause ever being revealed. If it wasn't symptomatic, they were immune for the rest of their life. However when, to combat various other plagues, modern sanitation began to be used (so fecal waste wasn't dumped into the same water that people would drink), people weren't exposed to polio as infants. When they were exposed at older ages, then the problems arose. Those with the best health situations tended to be struck the worst; it became a disease of the affluent. Which is probably why so much money was poured into curing it, unlike, say, malaria (which still kills millions). :P There's absolutely no evidence that the rate of poliomyelitis compared to the rate of poliovirus infection in adults has ever changed significantly. As for the pesticide hypothesis, that particularly doesn't stand up to scrutiny. DDT wasn't even invented until '39, but the US had huge polio outbreaks before then. Remember FDR? :) H.L. Menken wrote about polio outbreaks happening virtually every summer in Baltimore in the late 1800s. It's illogical, too. Poliovirus progressing into poliomyelitis involves how readily the virus passes the brain-blood barrier. While chemicals that pass the brain-blood barrier are few, even fewer are the chemicals which alter how well *other* things pass through the barrier.

OK, thanks everyone, you've put this 'worrywort's' mind at rest! Howard,my GH is very small and serves me only for the winter months. I can heat it when necessary, but cooling it doesn't work! Our summer temps are just too hot for the building I use, actually a glass house. I have an attached screen house where all the lower light plants stay during the summer and do well. But the high light guys I try to keep outside. Rain this time of year is very unusual for us, my rain barrels are overflowing :))). Since you've given me an OK, I'm going to put the rhyncostylis plants out too and let them enjoy all the rain. Happy growing. Sheila :)

Carol, During the Red River flooding of 2007, parts of our Mesonet station were disabled for days and days. I think the issue lasted until the worst of the flooding subsided. At some point they went back and manually corrected what records they could, but much data for the Burneyville station for that month is incomplete and considered somewhat unreliable. It drove me nuts. I had to rely only on my own observations! LOL I need a rain gauge that measures 10 or 12" of rain. I don't need it often (hee hee) but once every 2 or 3 years we get 25-35% of our annual rainfall in one day. When that happens, depending on how fast the rain is falling, I have to put on my muck boots, grab an umbrella and run outside and empty the rain gauge when it gets close to the 6" mark so it won't overflow and give an incorrect measurement. In April 2006, we had 9.25" in one day and most of that fell in about 4 hours. I went out and emptied out the gauge when it hit 5", and then I went out and emptied it out again when it hit 4". Shortly after that, the rain pretty much stopped. This year, the 12.4" fell over a longer period of time--maybe 8 hours or so--and I dumped the rain gauge 2 or 3 times so it wouldn't overflow. Based on statistics, we shouldn't have a massive rainfall for another 2 or 3 years, but sometimes statistics lie. "Christmas Day maybe?" LOL LOL LOL Here is what I am thinking. I am about to catch up and I will have one of those days really, really soon. I have two large bowls of tomatoes on my counter to process, so I think I'll roast them and a few other veggies at the same time and maybe make roasted tomato-garlic soup. That takes care of them. Then, I'll pick tiny tomatoes this evening (too hot already this a.m.) and dehydrate them. Then, I shouldn't have to process tomatoes again for 2 to 4 days, although I pick daily. I'll pick okra at the same time I pick little tomatoes, add it to what I picked yesterday, and blanch and freeze that. That's another veggie I shouldn't have to harvest again until tomorrow evening then, and I usually wait until I have two days' worth before I blanch/freeze. I also should have enough purple hull pinkeyes tonight to either cook a batch or freeze one, and then I should be able to skip picking for a day or two because they are slowing down. So, if I can get black-eyed pes, okra and tomatoes all done today/this evening, I shouldn't have to process them again for about three days. LOL It isn't much, but it is the best I can do. That only leaves hot peppers and sweet peppers. OK, so I have a lot of sweet peppers coloring up and I can pick them and freeze them for future use any time. I might do that tomorrow. If I do, it will take me just a couple of hours to pick 'em, wash 'em, slice 'em or chop 'em and get them into the freezer. That, then would leave only hot peppers. I've done a very heavy picking of hot peppers at least every other week since mid-July. At the present time, it has been about 10 days since I did a heavy picking, although I run out to the garden and pick as needed for cooking or canning recipes. So, I might be able to go 5-7 days before I pick hots again since rainfall is low and growth is relatively slow. So, where this is leading to is here: if I pick and process okra, peas and tomatoes tonight (Thurs.) and sweet peppers on Friday, and postpone hots until Mon. or Tues., then I should have Saturday off! Well, I'll have to pick okra, but I can stick it in the fridge and blanch/freeze it on Sunday. So, you see, I might get a day off. Unfortunately, Saturday is our best chance of rain here (about a 70% chance of rain and they are saying it may be heavy) so it probably would be a good day to be inside canning. It is hard to make the 'day off' fall where you want it to fall. I might do all I can on Saturday if it is raining, and try to make Sunday the day off because I love to cook a big family lunch and spend the afternoon watching NFL football. We still need and want rain here, and I think that by the end of the weekend, maybe I'll be able to say we finally got some. And, all my food processing predictions assume the plants will ripen produce as I expect it to. Every now and then, you walk out in to the garden and discover that blackeyed peas are suddenly purple earlier than expected, or the okra grew especially fast overnight or whatever. At this point, I'm just grateful the fall beans, corn, cukes and peas aren't producing finished products yet. As long as I keep up with the still-producing summer plants, I will be putting up a little food regularly, but not huge amounts on any given day. I will have a big green bean and big corn day or two in October if all goes well. I really think the heavy food processing load is lessening though. I'm still doing frequent batches, but smaller ones. When the fall broccoli is ready, that will be a big day or two, but that's some time off. Dawn

Sounds like our summer weather. The main concern with tons of water is the soil drainage and the soil minerals depletion. Ours grow 100% outside under no protection. We get daily thunderstorms that dumps tons of rain on the adeniums, plumerias, prickly pears, echeverias and other plants that do not like to sit in water. The soils minerals deplete quickly due to the water so they need to be replenished. Use time released fertilizer time such as a 7-7-7 and supplement with a liquid once a month during the heavy rain season such as Dyna-Grow Tekt to strengthen the plant.

I don't know which is worse - having the weatherman calling for scattered showers and sitting and waiting for them to come or having an amateur weatherman husband who will pull up all these radar sites and show me excatly where it IS raining. Sometimes it is less than a mile away but we seem to have this shield that has weather systems just split all around us but NEVER make it over us. It really is frustrating to see rain so close yet never make it here. We are facing a week of 95+ with no rain in the forecast. We really do need some tropical systems to kick up and dump rain all along the east coast but not be severe enough to cause wind damage. I love gardening but I want to play in the garden not drag hoses around and try and save my poor babies....

In the same boat here...but it ain't floating LOL!
We only get an average 17" on annual precip and even if we make that mark it's never enough because it's all spring and fall rain and maybe a tease in summer. It's also pretty common that when we do get a summer thunderstorm (with rain...not common)the clouds split right before hitting us!!
Well I guess I can just be happy in the fact that we haven't had any dust storms....YET! Last summer we had 2 hit us at 70+ mph!

Me too - - no rain for two weeks now and not much before that. They said a shower would come last night but NOOOOOOOOOO, it did not. And there is nothing on the radar this week either.

I am almost ready to bite the bullet and use money saved for less pressing things (you know, kids college and such - smile) to install drip irrigation! I sent a link to Donn's recent post containing information and suppliers to my husband - HINTHINTHINT--- but haven't heard a word of enthusiasm. The beds are far appart (over a dozen of them front and back) and after taking on burying hose a few years ago just to make some facuets to connect hose/sprinklers to, I don't think he is up for it.

We are "babysitting" a neighbors yard this week while they are on vacation and they have a drip system in their beds. I am going to use the opportunity to really study how it is set up and maybe I can do it myself! Once it cools off that is.....it is just too disgustingly humid to move today.

We had one horrendous thunder storm last night with hail the size of large marbles for about 15 minutes and then hard hard down pour of rain. My lilies took hell from that. It's cooler today than it has been but the air feels like you are walking through water. I'm sorry for those of you in drought conditions but sorrier still for my lilies.

We're having the same problem. The lawn has been all crispy for weeks now, but we always see rain just north and south of us. I gave up and installed the drip system a few weeks ago. I had to order more parts for it and finished it yesterday. I bought a kit from Dripworks to get started, then bought a few more parts later when I decided to include more plants than I had originally thought. It is so nice. I don't have to do anything as my husband loves it and will turn it on for me in the mornings. My roses are loving it too and look a lot better. We're actually getting a bit of rain right now which is great.

Same here too. Promises, promises from the weather guys and we get nothing.

You can take a compass and draw a circle around my town. Everyone gets rain and storms but us, right smack in the middle. What is going on?

Last night we heard distant thunder for about 6 hours, an occassional streak of lightening and once we had some of those huge drops of rain that polka dot the ground and do nothing else.

Don't want the severe storms or even a thunder storm. Just a couple of hours of nice, gentle soaking rain every couple of days.

This heat and hummidity is killing everything, drying out the ground faster than we can get the water down and the strong breezes added to it make things even worse.

It really seems to be a brutal year - either NO rain or storms so hard and violent that you can't help but wish they hadn't happened. We are almost 11 inches behind in rainfall...one of our recent storms brought down four or five trees out in the front woods as well as a big oak across my garden path (leaving my shade bed in the sun). Sheesh.

But I am SO grateful that THIS year we have a good, deep well and we can water the plants. Boy, do they show it! Last year at this time our well had been dry for 3 months and it would be another month before we could get anyone to drill a new one. You can only imagine what my garden looked like.

Yes, I'd love to have nice gentle rains every week - who wouldn't? But I am so thankful for the water we have.

Oh, Bonny, That's awful about the hail! It is so destructive, isn't it? And I'm sorry for your lilies sooo disappointing!

Oh, the weather here is hot and humid. We haven't had but one inch of rain since the middle of May and are down the same 8" as Karen for the year. The (small) backyard looks like an oasis and the (big) front yard looks like crispy critters. Do I need to say the flowers are in back and grass is in the front? LOL!
