Greetings everyone,

I am feeling guilty because I have had hippie blooms to share with you, but I have been too busy with work and a vacation to post the photos.

I hope that I can redeem myself with some shots that will bring a bit of cheer to Cindee and Lizalily who are in the process of healing, and also serve as an enticing warm up for the upcoming fall season.

Some of the photos were taken in the days before leaving for vacation. The last four shots were taken today.

Oh my gosh! I absolutely need San Remo NOW! If you hear someone knocking around the house at 1 AM, it is just me, making off with your plants! YEh, right, and I would probably stumble over a speck of potting soil and land on my fanny and shake the house too, but hey, I Could try it if it would land one of these at my house!

I work for a company that makes a natural herbal based menopause relief formula. It's got ashwagandha (sensoril), HMRlignan, vitamins, and minerals. I'm around a 30 year old male so I haven't tried it, but what I'm reading makes it seem pretty good because it's non-hormone based and ashwagandha seems like a pretty good adaptogen to use overall. My personal feeling, again as a man, is that menopause should not be painful and difficult and my mother said that she didn't have a bad time other than night sweats but she doesn't really associate that with menopause. She was a very healthy eater though and always had a rich garden of greens she'd eat from and was active and not overweight. As a nutritionist, I believe that most problems people are facing are from general lifestyle mis-steps such as not eating enough fruits and vegetables, not sleeping enough, not exercising enough, and being stressed. I would look at those areas before self-diagnosing myself as suffering from any malady because those are much more impactful than anything else. I hope that helps, David

This is a rather aged thread, but I couldn't help but chime-in on it, because this has become a subject in our home. (I beg your forgiveness for resurrecting the dead.) Brugmansia (Angel's Trumpet), Datura (Devil's Trumpet), and notable others (Belladonna, ad infinitum) in the plant kingdom, have highly variable toxic/pharmacological affect upon the human body; as well as wildly varying concentrations of such substances, within their parts and on their surfaces, over time. As a category, humans vary widely in their susceptibility to the various alkaloids found in such plant specimens. Furthermore, individuals have a wide variation in their reactions to such substances over the course of any time interval you might be interested in examining. I would imagine age to be a huge factor in some cases. There is much misinformation being disseminated on both sides of the fence with respect to this issue toxicity/sensitivity. I, myself, have been working with Brugs for quite some time, now, and do not--for the most part--react adversely to any of the plant substances I have encountered. While I certainly don't ingest the plant or anything from it, I don't take what I consider to be paranoid measures to protect myself from being exposed to, or decontaminating myself after exposure, Brugmansia plant parts or secretions. I have had a single incidence of slightly blurred vision in my right eye after accidentally getting a dose of Brug sap in it. It was not much of an incident, if I may say so, and was--at most--a minor irritant to me for a couple of hours. I have had zero effect from wading into my Brugs with the pruning shears and getting my hands and arms covered in the plant secretions, along with a nick or cut--or two--on my hands and elbows. This is regular behavior for me, and I have not developed the habit of conversing with my toe nails or lady bugs. I do, however, react violently to things like malathion analogues and consumer-level defoliants; and cannot tolerate exposure to them for even short periods of time; so, I take far more care about avoiding manufactured chemicals than I would ever think about with respect to my Brugs, and I haven't many stories to tell as a consequence. Maybe I should type-up alarmist-toned messages, warning people not to ingest insecticides and weed killers, and spread them around the Internet? Naw....it's too insulting to the intelligence of the reader. In terms of credibility, the story attributed to the Y! group does have the overall tone of the Apocryphal alarmist tale--complete with the liberal use of the exclamation point for emphasis. It rings far more like a fabrication; woven from generally valid bits of common sense, and taken to the extreme; than it sounds like the narrative of an actual event. We all benefit from the application of valid common sense; which, admittedly, seems to be rarer these days that it was when I was a kid. Nobody benefits from histrionics--except, maybe, Snopes. "Hmm...methinks I am being fed some BS on the Internet."--WildCat I do have to agree.

I got both of them this autumn, the seasonal flu shot in September and the H1N1 in October when I worked at a City Flu shot clinic. No problems with either one. I get a flu shot every year. I work every day with very vulnerable people. Having had the flu before, I NEVER want it again, and I certainly don't want to pass the flu on to someone who might die from it. Yes, there are risks, as there are with anything we do, but the risks from a flu shot, or any other immunization are very, very small, considering the millions of people who get immunizations every year. Several years ago I got both the flu shot and the Pneumovax and 4 days later I had shingles. It might have been too much of a jolt to my immune system (but it might have had nothing to do with the immunizations), but with quick medication, I got through it with minimal discomfort. In the future, I'll continue to get both vaccines, just not at the same time. It's the non-immunized who spread disease - whether it's a preventable childhood disease or influenza. Non-immunized children pass measles, rubella, whooping cough, etc, to children frequently too young to have been immunized. These diseases can still kill children. My SIL was not allowed to get his smallpox vaccination before he left home for his deployment in Iraq because of the risk to both kids. I agree with igloochic, if you are not going to get flu shots, stay away from others if you feel sick, don't assume it's not the flu, the risk is too great to other people.

What great, thoughtful responses to this very sensitive topic! I can relate to the loss of libido--frankly, we're about a decade younger than the OP and her husband but at 56 YO, I too have come through menopause with a decided lack of interest in sexual activity. There isn't anything physically 'wrong' with me, and my husband is as he always has been a very considerate and giving partner. But truthfully, I don't really care any more about sex and the thought of never having it again wouldn't bother me one bit. However. My husband is still interested, to say the least :). In fact he is more ardent than ever now that birth control isn't an issue, and now that our lives are a bit less stressed and child centered. Then too I do believe that most men experience sexual desire as much more of a physical *need* for release than most women do. In our marriage, both of us are very strong, independent people and as I've often said, the ties that bind us are loose--and unbreakable. We have our own jobs, hobbies and friends in addition to the family life we have built together. Our sexual partnership is for only us. Nobody else can be part of it, nobody else can or will know that part of our marriage. So at this season of my life, our sex life is what helps cement our bond, while it keeps our connection strong. And now to I'm sure no one's surprise I must address the problem the OP wanted to discuss; having a partner tell you that unless you do X, Y or Z sexually you won't be getting something you want badly. This quote says so much: "But, I'm sorry your husband has resorted to extortion to get what he wants. If you simply capitulate that clearly marks you as subordinate." Once again, living in a relationship in which a woman does not have her own resources means the risk of becoming subordinate is huge. I cannot imagine being dependent on anyone to the level of him even being able to think what the husband expressed. Regardless of where the thought is coming from, I agree it is extortion and it is despicable. How very sad too, living in a marriage in which a husband has the power and financial authority to do this. I would never, never, never live like that. I"m sure there are many levels of complexity that can't be shared in an online forum. The the OP, I truly hope you can find your way to a compromise that leaves each of you feeling respected and loved, even if it isn't in the house you want or doing the sex acts he does. Ann

Wow! They're all gorgeous! I love Rio Negro, and that NOID is very pretty! They're all incredibly lovely!

I have Lady Jane and Pamela, and I like both... good performers!

Since I have enjoyed the beauty of many of your flowers, I have no doubt that being infected (or re-infected) with CHAD will cause you to plant more bulbs and keep your pollinating brush handy. I look forward to seeing more of your lovely creations. Cheers!

Oh Blanca-just lovely!! It makes me hanker for my winter blooms again! Where did you get Santana?? I love the intense green throat and the distinctive red/orange contrasting stripes. I must get me one this year. Is it a producer? Lots of babies??

Hi Cindee,

I got my Santanas several years ago from Dutch Gardens and Van Bourgondien. The first was a substitution and the second was a mislabeled bulb. However, I was ultimately thrilled because this mini blooms several times per year for me. Its scapes yield four flowers each, but the flowering behavior is unusual in that they open two at a time with a significant interval in between. One of my two bulbs has produced a surrounding ring of babies. The other endured some trauma and is recovering.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen Santana advertised for sale recently. I self-pollinated Santana earlier today. I also tried dusting another of its flowers with pollen from Misty because they are unexpectedly and profusely blooming. If I get any viable seeds, I promise to let you know.

Your NOID#2 is the same that Maria and I have and Maria christianned Peaches and Cream. I got it instead of a Pink Nymph.
Also, your "Not San Remo" seems to be a pretty healthy Baby Star.

There you have it. Now you can stick names to your babies.
I envy you for your Santana. Mine was a mislabel from last year, so I am still on the quest to find a real one. Enjoy yours and don't forget make us yellow with envy by posting your pictures.
