Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

It's not growing :( (pictures included)

I bought two amaryllis bulbs from a grower. It's been about 2 to 3 months since I've planted them. They have done nothing but sit there and be chewed on by eastern lubber grasshoppers. The grasshopper problem is solved so far. One of the bulbs hasn't been eaten and still hasn't done anything. Help!

Thank you soo much for that email. After removing all the dry tissue around the neck I see a tiny leaf on the unbitten and the tiny bulb. The unbitten one has a root forming but I missed and knocked it off. So those seem to be good. The bitten one has roots but no roots have grown. After cutting some of the neck off I see a leaf and no rot or brown stuff on any of them just red spots and redness where it was bitten.

Jay: One of the essential characteristics of a fruit tree is that it has fruit. So far, your specimen is only a tree, and it could be anything at all, seeded by birds. Small trees grow up on my property all the time, and are treated like the weeds that they are. If your tree ever fruits, it might make it possible to identify it on that basis. Oh Masha, 'Schoen Ingeborg' is sooo... lovely. I am so glad that you got that rose from Cliff! The coloration is really exquisite and I personally especially love the lilac shades in this rose. By the way I do believe the name of this rose is correctly spelled 'Schoen Ingeborg'. That is really interesting that Tina Marie "stripes" for you! I got curious and went back over photos that I have taken of the first flower of my Grandmother's Hat rose this year and at a closer look I see some striping in her, too! It is much more subtle than in your Tina Marie and also in the Grandmother's Hat photo that you shot at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, though. Great, that Tina Marie also has a good fragrance. I find that is one of the bestselling points of Grandmother's Hat, so it is nice to know that her sport has inherited this lovely trait! Thank you all for the advice. I have cut back the plant and made sure the drip line was in the right place. I am still adapting to gardening in the heat after moving here 2 years ago - my knowledge acquired while gardening in coastal Los Angeles does not apply well here in Sac. Don't recall the acanthus in a neighbor's yard in coastal LA doing the dormant bit... This forum is fabulous. I really appreciate your knowledge and input. Ryan - have you finished your degree? Later in the season, when the weather is still warm enough for outdoor growth, prune your plant down to a manageable size - manageable, to me, means that I can sit it next to a sunny window with light hitting the entire plant. I prune two weeks before bare-rooting and re-potting. Once new growth is showing on the pruned plant, re-pot. Remove all garden soil / old potting mix, rinse the roots and prune them back so they fit into a smaller container. The point of reducing the pot size is to ensure that the volume of mix will dry out in a timely fashion during the long gloomy Winter indoors. This allows you to water and fertilize (reduced strength) all Winter, which keeps the plant vital and lush. Note, if you're overwintering in a warmer zone, or in a greenhouse, et cetera, you may not need to take as many precautions as those of us who bring our plants indoors for the Winter. Josh

I had bulbs which i forgot to water and they died. I just left them but when i was about to throw them out i noticed 1 had a healthy root so i repotted them all and watered them. After a few months i saw leaves coming up from some of them.

So don't give up hope and put them somewhere warm to induce growth.

They can take a while to get started but once they do, i've noticed some roots increase by a few centimeteres in just one night.

Hippis really want to live! No matter the abuse, they can amaze you! Hope you found the "suggestions" helpful.

I was out on the side yard, in the rain, picking off snails! UGH! Some of the bulbs have leaves that would nearly come up to my shoulders. Yes...they are in 1-gallon pots, but that's still a good 4.5'+ for length. It's good to see that they are soooo happy. This can be a very stressful time of year. Temps of 100 and dry. I think I finally have the watering and shade down.

Someone was discarding HUGE framed window screens (6' x 3') and so I attached them to the frame around the pots and leaned them on one side to protect from hot southern sun. Bulbs are very happy!! Hope this means lots of blooms in March-June 2014!

Even my Komoriya bulbs have already put out 6+ leaves so, although those leaves were cut for shipment, I think it looks like we'll get blooms again in the spring.

My own crosses from 2-3 years ago are thriving...so I am really looking forward to LOTS of blooms!!

Donna... hehe! Aw come on... You've seen the pics in the past. You know they just get huge over the summer. I'd post another photo, but since I'm using the phone's camera, it would probably be sideways or upside down. Ya know...aggravating for everyone...even me, since they look fine when I post them!
