Transplanting roses this time of year?

Grandaughter just bought a new home. Yard did not have a drip system and so roses in front yard looked dead. She cut them back to about three inches and they now are showing signs of growth. She does not want to keep them as they are planning on a desert landscape in the front yard. Can they be moved and transplanted this time of year or would it be best to keep them in containers until it cools down?????

They can be transplanted but you will have to keep them protected from the sun until the weather cools. Might be easier to put them in containers that you can keep in the shade for a while.

.. Pehaps I just 'lucked out' but>>>
Before the monsoons finally got here I absolootly had to trasplant my 8 roses to larger pots!(long-- er story that tis)
So here is what I did>> 1. pruned out all the "UGLEES".... down to as far as I thought the certain plant could handle it.Some were nubs!
2.lightly fertilzed
3. watered more often
4.made my own soil mix(more later on that, if you'd like )
5.found soil polymers with low slow release pellets (7-7-7)
6 waited till those purty pinky/purple leaves of new growth turned green on the nubs
6a.drilled holes in NEW gigantic pots added magic soil mix, polymer crystals and TRANSPLANTED them
6b.just closed my eyes .. and prayed to the gods
7.the rain gods figured they would grant a few miracles>>BLESSED RAIN..slow an steady..and in buckets too at times
well it was such a gamble... Cannot take credit..'someone knew how very special those roses were to me.I wanted to share, as sometimes where theres a will' there is a way!!

It sounds like you are doing fine. Probably the yellowed leaves will fall off, but if you keep them watered they will grow new ones very quickly. I transplanted three roses from a friends house a few weeks ago, and they are all doing great, now. One lost all it's leaves, but it was already covered in blackspot so I expected it. It has put out lots of new leaves, and the other two plants are putting out new cane growth, so yay! Unless you have really heavy clay I don't think you can over-water newly planted roses. One day last week I accidentally left my hose misting into the roots of a Pope John Paul II all night long. It rewarded me with a BANG of growth!

I'm hesitant to post this because the GardenWeb people frown on "commercial advertising" and this looks kinda like that. Especially if they detect the name of a company that has spammed this site. What time of year is it best to transplant Irises

Our Garden Club just last week visited an iris grower. He had fields of iris. One of the main questions was when to move iris, and how often to clean them up He said that the best time to clean and move iris, is six weeks after they finish blooming. He also said that all the dead or parts should be removed and just put back the new roots. He had a beautiful selection of iris and has been doing this for years. It was an interesting meeting. He invited all of us back if we wanted to buy iris in six weeks as he will have them for sale. Hope this helps.

I bought it from Heirloom as Lawrence still have the tag sitting in the ground with it, I prefer Samaritan myself:) I went out last night looking for aphids to kill and took a look at the 'bush', it's a skinny 2' tall:) Also a pic from last Sept. this rose has different colors depending on temp. Thing is on HMF pics are posted I think to all the akas when you put one in. They call they synonyms though. My ex was a Lawrence, I really hate the name too actually as well as him, maybe I will change the name, LOL* When I went looking for Samaritan I had to settle for Lawrence..

You might be able to do it this time of year, but, if you can wait, I would recommend moving them in mid to late October, once it cools down I bit. Your odds would be much higher. Cut them back to about knee height. Carefully dig them out trying to keep the root ball all in tact. Plant them in there new home. Water them daily till you have new growth, then slowly cut back on the watering. You are much more likely to loose them this time of the year, than if you waited until October, which isn't that far way. Especially if that root ball is disturbed too much.
