I'm a sucker for zinnias, anyone else?

I know, I know, they're super easy to grow so not necessarily worth boasting about, LOL, but they certainly are pretty so that's worth sharing.

About six weeks ago I scratched a few zinnia seeds into the soil around a small grapefruit tree in the garden that gets watered twice a week and they're already starting to make some nice blooms so I thought I'd share. I don't know about you, but I can't stop planting seeds even during Blast Furnace season, so it's fun to have things like these zinnias, and portulaca, and vincas that pop right up from seed even in summer and grow and bloom quickly.

I did a mix of colors so each bloom is a surprise. The bees and butterflies love them as much as I do.

In any case, I just thought I'd share. I hope you'll take a look and enjoy. If you're growing zinnias too, let us see/hear about them, and if you have something that you love planting outside in summer from seed, let us hear about that too.

Your zinnias have nice colors. The rain lilies look good also. My zinnia is not an annual but the desert zinnia (acerosa). Not much happening in my garden except watering. I do admire neighbor's ripening prickly pear fruit every once in a while. Hope you get a bumper crop of the zinnias!

Hiya Larry and everyone,

GREAT pics! I've been admiring a lot of prickly pear fruit these days too. It's amazing what variety there is! So nice to see.

I'm embarassed to say I've never tried desert zinnia though I always admire it when I see it. How has yours done long term and what conditions do you give it??

I do do blackfoot daisy which isn't a zinnia of course, but creates a similar visual effect. Below is another of my zinnia zinnias (Z. elegans). I made a small bouquet of several different colors this morning just to enjoy indoors too. I planted some narrow leaf zinnias (Z. angustifolia) around an orange tree that I grew from seed and they've done pretty well but are battling spider mites, ugh, which are not molesting the hybrid zinnias at all. In any case, below is another pic of one of the zinnias around my baby grapefruit trees--it's fun to plant a mix of seeds and see what colors come up. Pic is embedded at at the link below.

Nice Calathea, pretty coloring, sorry you lost it. Well I got suckered last wknd @ the Supermarket, by a Hoya of all things. I've rarely had a big full 6" pot of them (I collect Hoyas & C&S for anyone new that doesn't know that). It was a plant old H. carnosa variegate. On closer inspection, it's 2 different white edged Hoyas, one is Crimson Queen, the other I don't know the ID, but it's a more delicate, thinner leaf, yellower green which (I've mentioned elsewhere before) is somewhat reminiscent of a varieg. Ficus benjamina. Wasn't EA, but was watered same day I bought it, a wk later, the mix was still soaking wet. So Sat. I took it apart, changed the mix & split it into 2 smaller hanging pots, total of 20 separate plants, most very well rooted. So am in Hoya heaven, w/ 2 new Hoyas hanging in my kitchen, now if they'd just bloom for me I'd know I was in heaven for sure!!

This reminds me of one time when we decided to start raising ostrich. I worked on an Ostrich ranch for about 3 months to learn the ropes. There was one ostrich that had gotten down and couldn't get up. The ranch would not put her down or allow anyone else to do it. It was summer and the temps. were in the triple digits. After watching the ostrich sit there in the boiling sun for about a week. I decided to give it some water. I put a pan in front of her and filled it up. The ostrich drank, and drank, and drank and when I walked away she was still drinking. When I came back later she was stone cold dead. I felt good about doing what I had done. At least she got to enjoy some water even if it did kill her.

I agree with you Ellendi, when you borrow money, it should be paid back based on the agreement but a lot of lenders have changed the terms of those agreements and made it almost impossible for people to repay making the banks even richer. It's a vicious cycle. Some, not all but some of the scenarios we're seeing today involve a lot of good money conscious people, who had every intention of paying their debts and because of circumstances beyond their control, are now forced to make a choice between housing and feeding their family or paying debt. Which would any of us choose in those circumstances? I personally, feel the banks are responsible for a large part of what's going on economically and they should be willing to help those deserving of it by any means they can, but they're not. Instead they are calling loans due, forging foreclosure documents, making more risky transactions, raising rates on people, charging grossly exorbitant fees and the list goes on, so it's very hard to have much empathy, KWIM? BTW, when I say deserving of it, I mean those who are not spend alcoholics abusing a system. With a shortage of jobs and change in the working climate many qualified people can't find work in their own fields and are taking jobs at whatever pay then can get just to keep afloat. If you live in an area that isn't in decline or working in a field where you see a lot more of these scenarios on a daily basis, it's hard to relate but I do and let me tell you, good, hard working people are finding themselves in situations they never dreamed they'd be in and it happened quick. It's horrible and it's scary. In addition to the above, debt Collectors are obligated to follow certain procedures and will often times have no problem breaking the laws to collect because they're betting the person they're contacting isn't aware of their rights. I suspect that that is the case with the caller in the Dave Ramsey conversation.

Wow thanks Omega for the feedback. The contractor is qualified— he’s the one who installed the flagstone 15 years ago right before the former owners foreclosed on this house and it fell into disrepair for about a decade. This particular contractor is well known in the area for being highly reputable and also for being expensive but I do believe that you get what you pay for in life. I just visited one of the contractor’s other pools to look at the Pebble Sheen color and the pool owner told me that he spent $125,000 on the natural stone in the pool deck alone. So this contractor certainly knows how to use natural stone and I am betting he fields many more requests than he lets on. I am used to this – I got the same song and dance when we were installing our foyer floor— and master bathroom shower in our old house. It is easier for contractors to use simulated materials and they get the added benefit of the upcharge for obtaining the simulated materials that consumers cannot obtain on their own. I will admit that I am not a contractor but I strongly suspect that this is the case— it’s easier for them to install and they get some financial benefit from it. Why else would they push it so hard? With home renovation, there are enough alternatives for labor that I could find someone to install real marble at a reasonable cost. With a pool, there are so few options. There is really only one other contractor in town with a comparable reputation and I can’t even get him to call me back. With a bid of nearly $30,000, one might think another contractor would be interested in the job. I know it’s not a whole new pool installation but, come on, $30,000? I am reminded of runway model Linda Evangelista who once said “I don’t even get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.” I appreciate your suggestions about finding a contrasting stone. I am definitely going to look into that. Because the contractor has shown me very few natural stone options, I think I’m going to go ahead and start ordering samples from websites myself. Would you discourage me from doing that? Are there any particular website that you recommend? I’m not even sure if I’m allowed to ask that on this forum...

Grant, I haven't checked in for a while. The flower pictures you linked to are interesting to browse through. You have some of everything! A neighbor gave me cuttings of Harrisia jusbertii and her night blooming cereus. They seem to be taking well. The zinnia acerosa I just put in last October. I've seen it look great out in the desert on hikes, so I didn't do anything except plant it. I let it go dormant (withheld water) in the 100+ weather but the rains have brought it back again. Good luck if you decide to plant some!

Thanks for the additional information. I'll give the desert zinnia a try. I saw some at Baker's nursery this weekend. I'll give them a try in mid or late September. Good information, especially about them being okay getting really dry once they're established.

I haven't been able to check in much lately as I just started a new job this week, and I've spent several evenings looking at houses for sale for a friend moving to this area from Florida. I'm hoping she'll join this forum when she gets to town in a month or so.

Anyway, the regular zinnias are doing great and I love them. Below is another pic of a pink one.

I have one harrisia and I love it. They are so low maintenance and they do make those amazing blooms. Mine is in the SE corner of the back yard and tosses up blooms off and on all summer.
