yellow leaves, honeysuckle

So i read the FAQ's and don't know what to do. Leaves are yellow and dropping. Only one flush of barely any flowers came this year. I am watering everyday by sprinkler system and by hose around perimeter of canopy. Vine has been trained on a stake and twists into a canopy shape lile a mushroom. Should i buy iron by itself? I already fertilized with Bayer shrub slow release three weeks ago.

We really miss the fragrance this year and are worried that it is dying.

Water or more fertilizer? Very dry here in Michigan, maybe like Arizona. Anyone experiencing this and has found a solution already?

You are overwatering. Honeysuckles actually thrive on little water and are pretty drought tolerant. Even here in AZ I have a honeysuckle in a pot, and it gets water every 3-4 days. Let it dry out between waterings, and then deep water so the roots grow downwards instead of near the surface. Also overwatering washes away all the nutrients you may have given it, leaving just salt near the roots. The yellowing leaves could be a result of salt burn, or just too much water. Dry out the roots for several days, pick off the yellow leaves if you want to, feed a good balanced fertilizer, and let it recover. Then start deep watering about once a week.

Honeysuckles are cool.

I agree seems like u totally drowning it. I have a few outdoors and they get water 3x a week for about 40 min via drip. Total to maybe 2G each time. They would get BROWN leaves but i think its normal sunburn.

I agree with stephanotis_1 - yellow leaves are almost always sign of overwatering or bad nutrition, perhaps salt. Cut down on water A LOT. See what happens. If brow crispy leaves come then bum it up a little.

Just to clarify that using vinegar does work to lower the pH of soil, BUT only in specific areas like small planting beds or containers. The immense soil volume in a yard is too large to be affected much by acidifying amendments. Iron deficiencies are expressed by yellowing of older leaves, especially in the tissues between the veins (which usually remain green). Ironite actually contains very little iron by percent of product. It works pretty well on lawns, but a better choice for trees and shrubs is chelated iron. Simply put, this is a water-soluble iron that can be absorbed by plant roots. New leaves that are yellow indicate a nitrogen deficiency. Yellowing leaves can also be caused by overwatering. The water in the soil pushes out the air. Oxygen is essential for plant roots to absorb nutrients. This is why deep, but infrequent irrigationis recommended. It gives oxygen a chance to make its way back into the soil.

I would wait until growth begins. The new leaves should push the dead ones off of the vine. If you look at the point where the leaf attaches to the branch, you should see the buds of the new leaves. The fact that the leaves are dead or dying should stimulate these buds into growth. Linda

Purple blemishes on honeysuckle leaves

I don't have any experience growing honeysuckle. This Spring I planted Lonicera serotina Florida. When it arrived some of the leaves had purple blemishes. The stems are naturally purple. The new leaves look healthy- green on top; purple-tinged below. Some of the new leaves look as though they are starting to get the same purple blothes as older leaves. Some of the older leaves started to yellow and fall off. I was thinking it may be mildew. I will try and get a picture. Unfortunately I cut off most of the yellow leaves and shriveled buds that I was able to reach. It was fine until we went down into the 40's last week for a couple of nights and after that is when I noticed the yellowing of the some of the leaves. Penny

I was having the same trouble with Cape Honeysuckle in AZ. Because they are on a drip system I can only adjust water amount so much. They do suffer from sunburn, but I added Ironite to fertilizer and new growth in green again.
This area of AZ has clay soil similar to what I had in CA. And you almost have to use ironite along with Miracid (fertilizer for azaleas) to keep the pH down and avoid chlorosis, yellow leaves.
