Wintersown cuke harvest!

I winter sowed the Burpee Hybrid II seed this year. I was able to get five out of six seeds to successfully germinat. All 5 are taking over the trellis I built for them.

Well, I harvested 2 yesterday and have about two dozen (at the minimum) that will be harvested this week.

Last year with 2 plants I was able to yield 210 cucumbers!

And by the way, they were juicy and tasty!

Congrats! The first harvest is so fun. That's a LOT of cucumbers already. Do you simply slice and eat or do you use them in other types of recipes?

I don't have any cucumber plants this year, but am still waiting for zucchini, gourds, and melons. I think it will be a while. I do have one tomato beginning to turn red.

Hello GG07 -

congrat on the cucumbers. I didn't plant any veggies this year - but a neighbor has tomato & grn pepper plants budding. Hopefully will get some from her when more plentiful.

What part of SEPA are you in? I live near the Montgomery Mall in Montgomery County.

They'll develop yellowy streaks. Also, they're like other ripe tomatoes--they have some 'give' when you squeeze them and they should twist easily off the stem too--plus, they smell like a ripe tomato ;-)

Tina, I went to visit the garden near my house that Tom was talking about and here is my report. While everything is producing in the ground, tomatoes including, he even had some ripe already, they started to show signs of disease, a lot of yellowing leaves and wilt. As for the artichokes they were producing really well! huge heads but they had bugs that came from all the animal bug planet, I have never seen them before, the interesting thing is that I saw no small animals eating them even the garden is in the open and we have in the area, squirrels, armadillos, skunks and others. About the blue tomato plant, out of my 45 different varieties, a lot of them from Tom, they are producing fruit now, but I could not called them the strongest plants, the experts said the strain are not set yet or something like that. From all the blue plants that I grew some of them have purple stems and some not, we will see how the tomatoes turn out. Another new tomato that is showing to be very productive is the cherry, tomato berry and it is shaped like a strawberry, cute! Keep the sweet potato slips moist till established, after that they will be very hardy in the garden and don't forget to keep some sweet potatoes for the future. Silvia

Thank you for your nice comments, you are being very kind.:) About the cucumbers in my experience they will grow bigger and then you can still eat them at any size, just trim the inside. They get bitter when they get uneven watering. When is very hot, I try to keep them moist. It is better for production to keep the fruit picked while young and not to let it mature because that can send the wrong signals to the plant. I just had a cucumber cooler it is made in the blender with cucumber, water, lime juice, mint, sugar to taste, a pinch of salt and pepper. Silvia

I know your delight! I just ate my first few 'Cucino' Cucks this past week. Just like stated they really are tender skinned (and yummy) with no need to peel it away and they are soooooooo cute :)

I am waiting on mine yet, although I see them starting. Got mine in very late.
This year trying the French Cornichon type for gourmet pickling, you harvest at not more than 2 inches, but you can let grow to 7inches and they don't need bees to pollinate. Everyone else is growing the straight 8's so there will be lots to go round.
This year I planted way more veggies then ever, and I am glad when I see the prices at the stores!

Congrats! I would love to be able to grow cucs, but it seems to be one of those things that just won't be successful for me.....always get one or two and the rest just fizzle away. :(

Believe it or not, the prior two years I grew from seed (or tried to) and I had such terrible failures. The first year, I got them in the ground and they got scorched. The second year they didn't even make it to the ground.

Well this year (third time is the charm!), I winter sowed and the harvest is abound! In 4 days, I harvested 11 cukes from my Burpee Hybrid II vines. I am still waiting on my Lemon Cuke vines and my Chelsea English Cuke vines. Never grew them, but I direct sowed this year and the vines are over 5 feet long already. Also, I got the traditional Burpee Spacemaster Bush cuke vines (5 of them as well) that I am waiting to harvest.

Can you tell I love cucumbers??

Greylady, Keep on trying! It took me a few tries.

Vera, I picked up some cucino seeds from T&M last week. I can't wait to try them (as well as the long white cukes) next year.

Bulbs07, I am not that far from you. Near the Willow Grove Mall. A lot of great nurseries abound in our area!

Mogirl, You are right. The first harvest is the best. The wife can't believe how juicy and tasty the cukes fresh off the vine can be. My rule of thumb: The first sign of yellow on the bottom, they come off the vine and go right into my stomach!
