Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

I thought you hippi growers might like this...

A few years ago, a coworker showed up with a bag of bulbs she'd dug from her yard and cut the foliage off of. It was the middle of summer so I figured the bulbs were doomed but I took them home, thinking I would plant them either in fall or spring. The bag got shoved under a table in the garage and I forgot all about them. Spring came and I was looking for something when a flash of red caught my eye. The photo shows what I found. The will to live never ceases to amaze me. And maybe you can read the name on the bag "Not Too Shabby." Needless to say, I planted them right away.

I haven't had much success in recent years. I think they don't get enough sun to bloom although they have produced babies. I'm going to take what I learn from all you smart people and keep trying!

Priceless is right! What a wonder nature is... all it takes is one tiny spark of life to light that fire!

You're very lucky to be in a climate where hippeastrums can be planted directly in the garden... that looks like a xJohnsonii bloom... a bed of those in full flower would look wonderful! I do hope they bloom for you in the future!

They are very smart animals. My son had a pet one also. I almost croaked when I learned his Dad had paid $50 for it and that OKC swap market thingy that had in OKC. It lived in a cage, but when it was out it would pile on the dog right along with her puppies and she paid no attention to it. The boys would open the door when that went to feed the horses and she would follow them to the barn. We lived near Lake Thunderbird and had a huge metal barn. She would climb up to the center beam and sit there watching from her perch, 30 or so feet up. When they finished, they called her and she came down and followed her back to the house and her cage. Smart animals.

Thanks for the link Mike. I would love to switch to pumice now, except I bought a giant bag of coarse perlite from a hydroponics store which I think will last for about 30 years lol. Where can you get pumice? Any ideas for all my extra perlite?? I would certainly like to at least try some and compare it to my current mix.
