Source for Zanthoxylum spp.

I need to acquire male and female Zanthoxylum piperitum and simulans. I'm guessing that I will have to obtain at least four or five individuals of each species to ensure I have both sexes. I've looked into buying seeds and/or plants. One Green World supposedly carries seedling plants of both species (more on that in the next paragraph). I've found simulans seeds offered by SheffieldÃ¢ÂÂs, but no one seems to have piperitum seeds.

I've never ordered from One Green World, but find their reviews less than impressive (OK, but with just a few too many reports of problems). I've also been told that One Green World's stock of Zanthoxylum was suspected to be misidentified.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any ideas about the best and most economical way to obtain either or both of these species.

z. piperitum plants available at the link below but are unsexed and expensive.
a search listed several sources for seeds and plants but all in the united kingdom and i guess that is problematic for international ordering.
z. simulans seeds available here:

Papaver somniferum, breadseed poppies. These are also commonly called opium poppies as they are the source of the narcotic which is used to manufacture heroin. Although seldom enforced, it is technically illegal to grow these, so many vendors do not advertise the species very pronouncedly. Oddly, the seeds themselves are not illegal, as they are the commonly used in baking. btw, you'd have to grow several acres of these poppies to generate any appreciable amount of opium, which is why they tend get overlooked when grown as ornamentals in a garden.

You should have posted this is the main forum as it gets more traffic, and this isn't a photo post. You probably won't find Thai Spirit available for sale in thailand. It is a wild collected plant that was brought back to the US and propagated. The native Hedychium are rarily offered in the markets there, especially one so rare and difficult to find. There are cheaper sources for it in the states though. Tim Chapman

Jenny, I went to the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center site's search and didn't find it, so I searched there with just genus, since sometimes there are sometimes multiple names for species, and the alternative names don't show up in their search. I'm guessing this is the plant I found listed as Zanthoxylum americanum (I've made similar slight changes to botanical names often enough!). Garden centers I've been to here have had at least one kind in recent years, maybe two - meaning there was some wholesale production going on.

Have you read this? Labeling issues are not peculiar to any one source. You just have to learn to recognize the different kinds involved so you know when you are encountering the ones you want.

Jeff, thank you VERY much for that reference. It may actually be worth pulling in some plants from Bay Flora.

Bboy, I know what you mean, but I'm not good enough to ID them from another state (read humorously, not sarcastically). I agree that there has to be sources out there, but they sure have escaped me so far.

I have read Jacobson's site before. I thought about emailing him, but after reading some things on his site, I figured he'd want to charge me a consulting fee or something.

Yes, you'd have to view the stock in person to avoid being sent one you did not want. If that is not possible then you are left with ordering what you find offered and being able to assess what you got afterward. Knowing what to look for still saves you growing the wrong one(s) for years, by mistake.

Arthur responds to all e-mails presented with normal courtesy ("Dear" etc.).

Dear Friends,

I just found Zanthoxylum simulans and cultivated Polygonum hydropiper and i just decided that i cannot live without. the problem is i live in romania and is somehow hard to aqquire propper seeds.

Do you happen to know any european vendor?

How can i be sure of the quality of seeds if i try from e-bay?

If i grow Zanthoxylum simulans from seeds, there is any chance to know which is male/ female plant, if Z. stimulans at all?

You may want to start your own thread so that you get the email replies, and so I don't. Also, your question might receive more proper attention since it would be on-topic in its own thread. But, here are a few European nurseries that report having stock of the plants you mentioned:

Agroforestry Research Trust - has Z simulans
Binny Plants - has Z simulans
Burncoose Nurseries - has both

The only way to have any confidence in an Ebay seller is if they have a high ranking. Even then you're taking your chances, since the replies would have been give before they buyers had a chance to grow the plants/seeds. Buying plants and seeds on Ebay probably is much more risky than buying from a reputable nursery.

No (reasonable) way to know sex of seedlings until the plants mature.

In addition to the above sources, Richters Herbs (in Canada) sells Polygonum hydropiper seed and appears to be willing to ship seeds overseas.

BTW, I have no personal experience from ANY of the sources I'm listing for you, so you'll have to evaluate them for yourself. I have no opinion on their quality or service.
