Really enjoying flowering tobacco right now.

Hi everyone,

I've been really enjoying my flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata) a lot lately, so I thought I'd share a pic of just one of the many plants I've let self-sow around my garden. I've been carting plants and seeds from garden to garden for years.

I really like these plants--they bloom all summer long, and really fragrant at night (when the flowers open), and if they're planted in shade they don't need a ton of water either (this one isn't even on "life support" (drip irrigation)). It's growing along the east side of my south-facing, covered patio and seems totally happy with just a splash of water every few days.

They self-sow as well which is always nice since the seedlings seem to pop up in the locations that make them happiest. Individual plants only live a few years, but they do make a lot of babies, and anything you start from seed (or that Mother Nature does) blooms in just a couple of months, so they're good annuals too. I'm really a big fan of these plants.

I like the old fashioned heirloom types that are scented, so I always make sure to start with that type, rather than the fancy new hybrids that keep their flowers open all day but have no scent. Whichever type, they're still great plants.

I hope you'll take a look and enjoy the pic. I have some light purple ones, and quite a few white ones as well, though the white ones always seem to have the nicest, strongest scent at night. If you're growing them too, let us hear about it.

Take care and happy gardening,

Grant
