Did you take some Benadryl? It appears to me that you are having an allergic reaction. It may or may not be the Milkweed. I've found, just recently, that I have an odd reaction to Cheeseweed (Malva sylvestri). If I rub up next to it (my arms, that it) while collecting leaves, I get QUITE itchy! Yet, I can be next to other Malva plants and not have any problems. I always keep Benadryl on hand as it is an antihistamine that I've found to work for me. I started keeping it in my purse because my 2nd Shih Tzu had all sorts of allergies and the emergency room treatments consisted of...BENADRYL! At $90 a pop at the vet is way more expensive than the box of the little pink pills I get at Target. ;P The latex/sap from Milkweed is quite dangerous if you get it in your eye. Trust me. I have had it happen thrice. It is MOST unpleasant and takes time to heal. Good luck with your lip.

Petersons publishes both a medicinal plant and edible plant guide that are invaluable resources but if you are a novice to wild plants and identifying them, I would suggest starting your learning from someone in person. Books are wonderful and I have taught myself much from them but my first teachers about plants, plant safety, and plant identification were my parents when I was very young. I also have taken many in-person identification and herbal medicine classes as well as guided walks and tours. Please look for classes or perhaps herbalists in your area. Wildcrafting and processing the plant material is time-consuming. I'm sure many herbalists would trade learning for help in collecting and processing botanical material. And in learning about your wild resources, be sure to check out United Plant Savers for a list of plants that are "at risk." These are native, medicinal plants that have been decimated in the wild. I realize I'm a little late for this discussion, but I had a tidbit I wanted to add anyway. As kids we used to pull a flower out of the top of the henbit and put it near our lips and inhale. It has a tiny bit of sweet sap (or so I guess) that is very pleasant. I recently showed this to my five year old daughter, then got worried it may not be good for her. After a frantic search online, I discovered the name of the plant and that it was indeed edible. So I ate a flower to see if it was sweet too. No such luck. I guess the sap is so minute it doesn't flavor the whole flower. Too bad. But it still makes a nice addition to a salad, though it's a little time consuming to collect!
