Has anyone grown cherries

I noticed a while back on one of the planting guides (can't remember which one) that it was possible to grow cherries in the valley. Even to grow Bings! I grew up with a Bing cherry orchard and I sure do miss having them.

If anyone here has had experience growing them, good or bad, will you post your experiences? Since January would be the month to plant, I'd like to know if it would be worth my while to invest the money.

Nice to see you check in treefrog and thanks again for the seeds,i have 2 of the goosecreeks growing now from seeds you sent and one brandyboy. Im surprised i havent read no where on this site or rthe other of anyone growing florida pink. These huge, 2 to 3 lb fruits are a gorgeous light pink. Extremely juicy, sweet and crack free, Florida Pink out-produces most plants in our garden. With very few seeds, huge production and great flavor, it is a favorite for cooking and fresh eating. Setting fruit well in hot areas, this beautiful tomato will be a fine addition to your garden. thats what laurel says about it. rowdy red is another i think will do well im growing. Named by Gary Ibsen, the seeds of this variety came to Gary from tomato breeder, Archie Millett, who crossed his favorite tomato varieties over many years to finally produce a disease resistant tomato with intense flavor. 'Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red,' is an open-pollinated tomato (78 days to maturity). The tall, indeterminate, plant produces lots of 2-inch (6-10 oz.), deep-red, round fruits with a subtle point on it's end. Fruit has robust, 'not for sissies,' bold, tomatoey flavors, with a firm, juicy flesh, that invites snacking in the garden, cooking, canning and seed-saving. Thanks for the follow-up! A search on this forum turned up just a single reference prior to this post. Have a feeling that no news is not good news when it comes to tomato lists. **** Rain, when searching for information about a variety I sure wouldn't rely on just information from this message site. I'd Google it, see who might be selling seeds, which isn't usually all that helpful since commercial places seldom say anything bad about any variety, LOL, but there's often links to places like the Plant Files at another message site as well as other message sites where tomatoes are discussed a lot. I can't mention those sites here publicaly b'c it's against the rules here at GW and a person can be banned for doing so. Carolyn

Hi mistymorn, thankyou for your repy, I have seen cherries flowering and fruiting in the Perth hills, what I was concerned about was this weeping cherry is located closer to the coast and just wondered about the amount of chill time it would get to promote a great spring show, being an ornamental weeping cherry this is the only reason for planting it,does any one have information about the minimum temperature required? I'm not sure about the long/lat the conditions here are so different from the east,any information would be greatly appreciated, I had given up on this post, thanks again mistymorn.

I have one here near gulf coast St. Pete - had it a few years now & it's starting to bear more fruit than @ first - delicious, but highly perishable - haven't had a large enough crop (tho it has bloomed fruited several times this year) to cook with yet. IMPE, fruits are best eaten ripe straight away - they lose flavor quickly if left to sit or refrigerated. Ongoing pest (really the only pest, other than aphids) is Little Leaf Notcher weevils - which make the leaves unsightly, but don't seem to hinder fruiting or growth; it's over 6' high now & I've trimmed up the lower branches to make a small tree. I scout & smoosh the bugs almost daily.

Most cherries require lots of chill hours - more than we get here in the low desert. One variety, Minnie Royal Cherry, only needs 200 - 300 but requires a cherry called Royal Lee as its pollenizer. Bing cherries need about 700 chill hours.

I'd be extremely surprised if you were able to grow sweet cherries in the valley. Most sweet cherry trees need a prolonged cold period (like eastern Washington has.)

I wouldn't even waste my time trying cherries here. Good luck if u try, though.

Well thanks for the feedback. Sort of busts my bubble, but better to know before I spend the money than after.

You can grow cherries in the valley. Minnie Royal and Royal Lee require 100 and less than 300 chill hours respectively (local nurseries or Bay Laurel). Cristobalina requires 200 chills (Arboreum). All may be somewhat self fertile but greater productivity with a cross fertilizer. Experience in the valley is still quite limited but reports are only around 50 cherries per (small) trees in Phoenix.

Avoid it on the commonly found Mazzard rootstock as it seems to be sensitive to Cotton Root Rot. Buy it on Colt or the new Newroot-1 (dwarfing) rootstock.

You will need to provide overhead protection starting around mid-May from the sun in the summer or the leaves sunburn badly. Think understory to a primary shade tree that provides dappled light or build a pergola.

Cherries are more shallow rooted than other Prunus species so they need more frequent waterings and a good thick wood chip mulch.

Minnie Royal and Royal Lee will grow here and produce on CR178/Z-Dwarf rootstock. They need 80% shade or the leaves will fry. There's one guy here who has a few of them growing well under his solar power array.

F_N, do you know a source of bulk wood chips/mulch in the valley? I have a pick up, so that's no problem.

So far I've been buying bags of cedar mulch at Lowes or HD, but that gets expensive.

Thank you everyone for the informative feedback! If I get both the Minnie Royal & Royal Lee since they're both needed to pollination, how far apart should they be planted?
