Pink Dogwood Choice: Satomi or Stellar Pink?
Comments (1)I've seen 'Satomi' with disease more than once here. I don't think it's resistant at all. Some years ago a friend heard a dogwood breeder (presumably Dr. Orton) speak at a nursery trades show. The speaker said pink bract color in Kousa was linked to disease susceptibility....See Moreseedling of pink dogwood, pink?
Comments (1)Yes, there is a chance that some percentage of the seedlings will show this trait. Further, this percentage will likely differ, based on the precise parentage of the seedlings....See MoreStar Magnolia or Pink Dogwood
Comments (1)"What is the variety of the Pink Dogwood with the open air branch structure with what looks too me the branches swoop upward with multiple trunk legs?" The native flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) blooms earlier before the leaves are on. They are blooming here in central NH now. Kousa dogwood, an Asian species, blooms a bit later, just after the leaves are unfolding so they bloom against a background of green. Which type are you talking about? Once you have figured out which species, you can then you can look at particular trees to find one with a shape you like. There are only a few cultivars with pink flowers, so you can look in nurseries to find one you like the shape of. In 5b, I expect that both species of flowering dogwoods will be fine in your area. My kousa got hit hard a couple of years ago when we had -23 temperatures, but it has recovered, though I had to cut out a lot of dead wood. The star magnolias' flowers may get frosted every few years, but most years they do fine, even in my area, so they generally should do well for you also. IME dogwoods will grow a bit faster, especially when young, but I have both magnolia and dogwood and enjoy both. Do you have room for one of each? The dogwoods have nicer fall color IME, and the opening leaves of the pink-flowered dogwoods are often flushed pink. The pale bark and fat, silvery buds of the magnolias are ornamental in winter, especially against a dark background, so both trees have interest beyond the spring flowers....See MorePurchase, planting Pink Dogwood zone 8
Comments (20)backrow my personal advice would be to buy a younger/smaller tree (maybe 3-5' tall), growing in a pot (not balled and burlapped). Buy sooner rather than later. Dig a hole about twice as much volume as the pot......perhaps a little more on the width. Remove sod/rocks/sticks from the soil. Carefully remove the tree from the pot disturbing the roots as little as possible. Hopefully it will have a good root system but not be terribly pot-bound. Plant in the hole with the soil at the top of the pot equal or just slightly above the surrounding ground level. Pack the soil down with your foot to make sure there are not large air pockets or areas that will settle. Mulch the soil surface with pine bark mulch or similar. Do not pile mulch right against the trunk. Soak the soil around the tree at least weekly this first Sprng and summer. Always keep the soil surface mulched around this tree (dogwoods have fairly shallow roots). IMHO this is about as simple as you can go. Yes there are a lot of ifs and stuff but that is about as simple as I would make it. If there are a lot of deer in the area you may have to also put a tall fence around it. A younger tree may not bloom for a year or two but it will be better established in the long run....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
