Pink Diamond question

Is the blossom of Pink Diamond heavily "quilted"? I recall other blooms on the list being described this way, but don't recall PD. My blossoms are really textured!

In spite of daytime temperatures approaching 95, I am still getting new blooms. I feel like the flowers are suffering a little in the heat as the blossoms aren't quite as perky as they were a month ago!

Here's my Pink Diamond. Pepto Bismol pink is the perfect color description that someone made a while back! The petals are very heavily "quilted", and the photo captures that detail.

Well, Linda, I thought he was dead and when I came out to compare him to your picture he had squirmed/rolled his way across my kitchen counter. His legs don't appear to be working right. Hopefully he will make a recovery. Anyhoo, Linda, he does not have black dots or any other markings except the pink diamond outlines, two on his back. Thanks so much, though, this is fascinating! I am going to put him back out in the yard now :-)

Questions about pruning into a tree: 1. Do you let the hydrangea grow as a shrub for awhile to let it get established and then gradually shape it over time as it gets larger? 2. Yes, it's somewhat realistic goal for most or any paniculatas for that matter..... ....however few things should be considered and specific pruning technique should be applied at the young age. (just for the record: to keep it at 4-5' height will be much easier than at 5' width. I think that limitation of 4' width should be forgoten at all). Anyway, at young age you have to create a strong shrub structure consisting of 3 to 5 almost vertical main trunks which will be allowed for branching only at 3' off the ground. Assuming such structure created (may take 3 to 4 years) annual spring pruning to 3-3.5' will give you about 5' shrub at bloom time. Somewhere on this forum I went into lenghty explanation (with illustrations) of this type of pruning, but don't remember under which title. Try to search either 'pruning paniculata' or 'forming paniculata' or something like this.

Thank you Macgyver - talk about moving a shrub... whew! I did a 5 yr/old Philadelphus (Miniature Mock Orange) this poor little shrub, with the most beautifully fragrant white blooms in June, was crowded between a 9'x9' H Tardiva & a large, old Patriot Hosta. Thank heavens I inquired in another forum & was reassured that this shrub is shallow rooted. A friend dug up & gladly took Patriot, a few weeks ago. The problem I had was removing all the river-rocks around the shrub, up to 3ft over where I needed to move her ... I'm glad I've outgrown the 'cringing' effect of digging burried river-rocks (like a teacher's fingernails on chalk board!!!) ... so much for my story!!! How wonderful to have a clean slate to create your art work huh? ... *the road to beauty is always under construction!!!* even old crowded ones like mine! I've only started collecting Hydrangeas since '05 ... H Tardiva was my first, altho I've had this 20y/o Nikko that I didn't know much about ... George (Ego45) Hayseedman, gardengal & Luis were very helpful & still are, as well as other experienced gardeners. They're generous with their knowledge ... I learned a great deal from them, as well as, gladly allowed being lured!!! The only constraints ... running out of ideal *real estate* &/or having to dig up old favorites ... oh well!!! Yes Jerry - check out Lowes, HD etc. this is a good time to look around... end-of-season sales ... even the better nurseries have good mark-downs on Hydrangeas! Fall is as good a time to plant anyway ... roots can get acclimated to native soil & zoom up in Spring! Good luck & have fun!

Kristi, I love Pink Diamond. Mine was spectacular. Pepto Bismol is RIGHT!

My PD has the same rippling and HUGE Flowers.

Another one I don't have... yet!

Pepto Bismol makes me vomit... I prefer to think of it as Bubble Gum Pink! If I have my choice of the two, I'm choosing the bubble gum... the flavor is a whole lot better!

I agree, Jodi, Pepto makes me feel sicker than I am!! LOL

I wish I had some others in bloom to propaagate with PD. It is by far one of the largest flowers, right up there with my Clown. Bubble Gum does evoke a better image. You have to get yourself one this fall!

It's on my wish list, I assure you! I'm not certain how much of my wish list I'll actually get to purchase, but I can always move things around the list to satisfy my wants! It's going to be hard to choose which of the pinks to buy... I've been impressed by so many... Candy Floss, Pink Star, Pink Diamond... how does one choose?!

I have others want's !! So far Pink Diamond has been sold out at least where I have been searching.

I think more bulb varieties will be more readily available after the new harvest of this coming summer... early autumn should bring a fresh variety to all the sellers.

Yes, they always bring out some new bulbs to cater for the Xmas trade and hope that they will all become disposable so we buy more next October.

Pink Diamonds were dropped to $2.50 in the After-Christmas Clearance sale. Needless to say, I bought them all (12).
