Greetings, I am new here and don't know much about trees but what I can tell U is this. 1. I've done a lot of research on the October Glory and from what I've read, you really can't go wrong with that thing. Matter of fact, I just planted one in my front yard between my sidewalk and street. 2. I just moved into my home a couple of years ago and we have this really, really, cool tree in the back yard that I have never seen. After two years I've finally had enough interest to find out what it was. I've discovered that it is a thornless, seedless Honey Locust tree.. It's quite large, the bark is really cool looking, the tiny leaves are aswesome. and there is hardly no clean up in the fall. The leaves just seem to disappear. Yet it gives great shade and from what I have read it's growth rate is pretty high. I just love the way that thing looks in the back yard. We even bought one of those tree face kits and put it on there..Something like this http://www.yardlover.com/products.php?catID=1491 Only annoyances i have are that I do get a couple branches laying around after a strom and in the spring time I get little tiny seeds or flowers falling on my patio. I would recommend the Honey Locust - It has that look that you are in a tropical location... Good Luck

trees are dug up.. when leafless.. when they are dormant ... but i do not know the proper timing for SC .. its either late fall.. early winter.. or late winter.. lol.. that narrows it down.. also.. will you be there to keep them PROPERLY WATERED???? if not.. the timing is IMPERATIVE ... for best success ... with this tree .. you could probably have 3 foot bare root whips mailed to the location rather cheap.. and at the proper planting time ... rather than driving hundreds of miles.. digging them.. transporting them.. torturing them.. etc ... what a nightmare for something that can mysteriously appear at your front door ... see link as an e.g. good luck ken ps: do NOT buy poplars .. tulip poplar is not a poplar .. its actually: Liriodendron tulipifera though fast growing.. poplars ... are fast to disease ... and fast to dropping huge limbs.. and fast to die ... and.. fast in tree terms.. is a decade or two ... but why plant future cost or problems .... eadaein, I've done a bit of research on this subject and have this to say about that! I chose a Shamel Ash for the front yard. It's a fast grower, looks great now and this is its first spring. For the backyard I'm planning a 'second patio' area that will be three Royal Poinciana's in a grouping, each tree about 20' apart. I believe they are also fast growers and will grow to a wide, flat umbrella if properly trained. The only thing about that Indian Rosewood is the upright shape. For a shade tree I prefer a wide crown, rounded crown or even the vase-shape to an upright. But it depends too on where the tree is going, etc, etc. There is a free booklet available at most nurseries called Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert. It has lots of great information. For example, they list the Indian Rosewood tree as a fast grower (40' x 30')with an upright shape, low litter, no thorns and it's a large shade tree. Eucalyptus grow fast but I hate those trees. Re: the vines the booklet says cat claw grows fast but can damage walls and fences. Think about Lady Banks roses, little maintenance, fast grower, thick evergreen. I guess I would put a sturdy trellis around the house for whatever you plant to climb up so it's not climbing right onto the house. Just an idea. HTH and good luck. Mary

What about a Chinese Elm? We have one in our back yard that we planted 11 years ago from a 15 gal. pot. It is now at least 30 ft tall with at least a 30 foot spread. I absolutely love it! I would read up on it more to make sure it is the tree for you, though.
