Foxtail Palm - in bloom!
Comments (4)There is a reason why foxtails are becoming so popular. They are beautiful palms. Thanks for the pictures! Is that a ficus in the 3rd pic beside the foxtail? If it is, dont they get huge?...See MoreCan a Foxtail Palm Survive in Zone 8?
Comments (11)Nope, many times internet facts can be misleading. I grow queens and grew a foxtail at one point. Queens will get slight frost damage at about 27F but can survive to about 20F or a bit less with considerable damage. It can take over a year for them to recover and have a full crown. I know this from experience. Because of this long recovery time period, an annual hard freeze (below 20F) would spell out death for a queen palm. Like David said, Foxtails will not tolerate frost at all. They are definately a strictly tropical palm. I lost mine to fungus after they experienced low 30s. Keep it as a potted plant on your porch or patio and bring it indoors in the winter. or you can use it as an annual if you'd like. Believe me, they do not survive in zone 9b, just like David said....See MoreCracked/split foxtail palm
Comments (0)can someone help me with my foxtail palm?! I have a crack in the middle of the trunk and it doesnt seem to be healing itself. I noticed it after the tree shed about 3 fronds ago and been hoping for it take care of itself, but it seems to be traveling up the tree. I have sprayed it with copper fungicide to prevent any disease. I purchased this plant about a year and a half ago with no visible damage, and hasnt had any damage since, that im aware of. I purchased another foxtail of a similar size at the same time that is thriving. The foxtail that is healthy has a trunk that is 4” in diameter vs. cracked-2.75”. I apply slow release miracle grow for palms, a little manganese sulphate, and a little muriate of potash every 3 months and havent had any previous problems. Is there anything i can pack the crack with to help heal the tree? Diameter with crack Crack with fresh bark from frond shedding Healthy tree Cracked tree. Maple in the background blocks some AM sun, but still receives plenty of rays....See Moreneed help with my Foxtail palm
Comments (17)Hey Oliver, my palm was actually fine just normal growth on it. It’s been in the ground for 2 years at this point. Unfortunately this past January/February we got a pretty good cold snap and it “burned” all of the foliage. We sprayed it with copper fungicide treatments for a month and a half and now just waiting to see what happens with fertilization and proper watering. It’s a double foxtail. The bigger one has new growth already starting with the dead ones falling off. The smaller one still looks good on the actual crown shaft but no new growth yet so hoping in a few weeks it will start to pop. It’s a vacation home for us in zone 9b Florida so I’m not there all the time so just doing the best we can. I’ll attach 2 pictures to show you what it looked like before the freeze all nice and green then a month later all the foliage was burned. So sad but I’m hoping it comes back🙏🏼 time will tell...See Moreazamigo
