Library of Plant Keys

I just struck gold, or at least it seems that way to me. I have been looking for a somewhat comprehensive on-line collection of plant keys for a long time, and just found one. A link is included below for anyone interested.

The only thing more I could ask for is a comprehensive random-access plant key. It looks like one is being developed for all of North America by the North Carolina Botanical Garden as part of their Biota of North America Program, but, from what I can tell, has still not been released.

Anyway, the link below could be very helpful for anyone trying to identify a particular species of just about any type of plant. Pick your favorite plant family and check it out.

Note that it is still very incomplete! It'll be several more years before the Flora of North America and the Flora of China are completed. Lots of genera, you'll get an error message 'No taxa found'.

I only tried about 6 genera, all of which came back good. At least it's a start and much better than what I had found before. Hopefully the more common stuff is complete.

The spring sale is the BIG ONE. Every year there is a theme. I worked it a couple years ago and the theme was dwarf plants, but there were alot of plants that were not dwarf as well. The best way to get access to the goodies is to volunteer. After the sale the volunteers get to buy the leftovers at a significant percentage off too. The lady in charge is Shirley (can't think of her last name but everybody knows her, she's been doing the sale for at least 20 years) and she spends most of the year sourcing the plants for the sale. You will find cultivars there that are pretty much very hard to find if not unavailable.

Kristin, welcome to the forum. This is a GREAT place for a Florida gardener, whether just starting, or an old-timer with green thumbs, hands and shoulders. You will love it here. I started here over ten years ago and have learned just about everything I know from these forums. I had a variegated pittosporum and it grew like a monster. They have very few problems and are generally very healthy. I eventually pulled it out to plant some tropicals in its spot but if you just want a big ol' healthy plant, pittosporum will fill the bill. Carol

I guess I'm dense, but what exactly is a plant key? Like a taxonomical lineage chart?

No, it's a plant ID flowchart. It can be used to tell which species an unknown plant is by comparing characteristics listed in the key to those of the unknown plant.
