Low stress musa basjoo mulching?

OK, I got lucky with my basjoo last year. We had a late start to winter and a mild winter after that. My basjoo was about 8 feet tall. I let it freeze and just piled frozen basjoo and canna leaves over it for mulch. I think I even left the stem standing, didn't cut it down. The main plant didn't come back, but the plant that was a large pup last year came back, along with lots of little new pups.

Here's my question - was I lucky to get by mulching this way, or can I expect it to work most years in a protected zone 6/7? (The previous year I had done the whole cage stuffed with straw and covered with plastic thing, and it all died/rotted/and/or was eaten by rodents.)
