Good question re bloom time but I *think* any male pollinator will do. Ken's red Female I think can be pollinated by the same male pollinators that pollinate Anna/49er and all the rest of the gang. I think this would suggest they overlap bloom quite nicely--that a male specially for Ken's Red would also pollinate the others then. BTW here's a more specific breakdown of the flavor IMO in case anyone is wondering: -Main difference with hardy kiwis and regular kiwis to me (besides not having to peel them and just popping them in the mouth like berries) is that most hardy kiwis do not have the sometimes harsh acidic after bite taste of a regular kiwi. Of course they are tangy sweet balance but that sometimes flash millisecond uncomfortable intense kiwi bite on the acidic side is missing--I think that's a good thing. I think hardy kiwis overall are superior to big regular kiwis in flavor. Anna and 49er have a beautiful tangy and sweet balance--just excellent. I can't imagine any better tasting hardy kiwis. I taste tested them two seasons in a row on 3 tastings total (with the first one blind to the variety names) and thought the same each time--those two were also the top two favorites of EL owner. Independent, blind, and repeated results agreeing with him is a good sign. Issai was the worst each time having a weird astringent taste afterwards and a bit of that overly acidic bite at the end (don't get me wrong I am in love with acidic fruit--but this is just an annoying astringent acidic weirdo taste). It is still an 7 or 8 out of 10 I'd say though. The rest were all 9's with no differences just a tad of that astringent/acidic bite of a regular kiwi and not as full of a sweet/tart balance in the initial flavor. Anna/49er were clear 10's and I could never choose on any sampling which was the better. Equal 10's. Ken's Red I think was a bit unique but I did not like it too much. Perhaps it tasted like a real kiwi more but without an aftertaste in a bad way--just in a good kiwi way but in that same spirit of a bit more harsh acidic. To me though it defeats the purpose of a hardy kiwi though when you start tasting exactly like a real kiwi... I think the hallmark benefit of these guys is that they are an IMPROVEMENT in flavor to kiwi--not an equal. But if you are really in love with regular kiwis--you may want to avoid Anna/49er possibly. So Ken's Red would be a 9 with a slightly different flavor profile. In summary, Anna/49er the best, then all others including Ken's red with a unique taste I can't quite recall, then Issai. They're not worlds apart in flavor. But I care a lot about nuances in flavor. BTW some do ripen at different times but I don't know if they bloom differently. I'd bet you'll be OK with any male. Hope this helps some get an idea of their flavors without having taste tested them side by side :).

Whoa, that`s amazing, my old thread popping back to life again. @gardengal: thanks for those cultivar names. I looked them up, according to my (very good) tree book, Autumn gold and Princeton S grow less tall (about 15 - 20 meter) than the plain species (20 meter -30 meter). plans changed, we planted just one Ginkgo (a seedling) which now just needs to keep growing. I looked up the link of the "plants for the future"-site, but as those folks seem rather into "saving the world" and "grow your own" I reckon their detailed botanical knowlegde might be not too scientific, kind of (the angle of branches are often an indicator of age, like: steep angle with juvenile trees, wider angle with mature...IME) inspired by all yous answers I did read up some more on the internet: to summ it up: 1) so, differences between young male or female seedlings in morphology don`t seem to exsist 2) as trees take decades to mature and flowers there are stories around of "transvestite" trees 3) shape of leaves varies very much, not only between different trees but even on one plant that link seemed to offer very solid information solid Ginkgo information and that short one from 1983 seems to be also very well based (have trouble linking that pdf, click the Joa-arboretun-link) Growth, survival and sex expression well, thanks a lot, have a nice week, bye, Lin

Hi Everyone, I bought Kantola (spine gourd ) seeds from someone and tried most of the seeds (about 16 seeds) but none of those were germinated. My dad used to grow this plant and to my knowledge it grows from tubers and it is a perennial plant. If any one has the tuber or plants can I have it please. I don't mind to pay. Butterflymomok and misssherry, I am happy to see that you all know the value of Larry's expertise, but I am definitely not surprised. I just stumbled into the forum as a newbie, and it will take a while to examine and read through old threads. I will try to catch up and contribute as I may to the discussions. Fortunately, my specialization is different than Larry's in that I work with noctuid moths primarily. I do a great deal of rearing and life history work. I stress the importance of valuing biodiversity because so much remains to be discovered, even right here in the US. The group referred to in my previous post has yielded 11 new species and one new genus and species in California alone. And we are talking about colorful day-flying moths that have simply been overlooked. I first found one new species in the MEDIAN STRIP of I-5! I was in a net swinging frenzy until the Highway Patrol intervened. There are wonderful things to be discovered everywhere: here at home as well as in far flung jungles. As, it turns out, Larry and I passed like ships in the night in one of those far away jungles over a decade ago. I didn't know that, of course, when I joined in the forum, but I couldn't shake the notion that I should know who Larry was. I was trying to place who he might be and used the the language of Papua New Guinea, tok pisin, to test the hypothesis and to offer my bona fides to Larry. The Larry I was thinking of would be one of the few people on earth to understand the references I wrote in that language. I am so happy to have rediscovered him! Misssherry, if you look at our tok pisin entries you will see the word "wantok", which means "friend". Tok pisin is a true pidgin language.
