I have a ticket into the help desk of Laughing Squid, my host, asking their assistance. I am hoping they have a very current back-up and that will help a lot, if it goes back a few weeks it's not too bad a problem to fix--it's just a lot of metadata and I hate, Hate, HATE putting in metadata.

I have no idea what this means ....but I am heartbroken for you. Arugh. I hate computer issues.

Oddly enough, I still don't feel crappy about this...it's sorta releasing in a way. I think it's actually easier to rebuild without being locked into working with what's already there. This is not the first time I crashed the site, I did it about four years ago too, and I had far less knowledge of how to build a site then. The new template I'm using is a better, cleaner and simpler design.

Let me sleep on it--it's late, I just got back from the airport, my son came home from vacation and tomorrow I have to be Mom and do his laundry ;-)

My best wishes are with you Trudi. As a veteran IT professional I know what this is like, but most reputable firms keep customer backups. It may not be the most recent, but it will definitely be helpful. Best practices usually suggest we keep at least two backups of everything - one online, the other on an external storage medium. Re-entering data is so laborious. Have a good drink, and sleep well. Things will look much better in the morning. Good luck!!

I've got another copy, it's in the dead XP next to me, I'm hoping I don't have to pay to have that uncrashed...the remake in is the new Vista. I hope to hear back from my host on Monday afternoon at the latest--they're out in San Fran.

The site is being restored by 'Laughing Squid' it will take some time but they will let me know when the process is complete.

Thank you everyone for your very kind words and support. Once the site is restored I'll continue the reconstruction to adapt old pages to the new template and continue to add in additional information.

I'm definitely no computer whiz, but I don't understand why you need to re-build? Did the host site crash or the your files on your computer? Please explain...I'd hate to see all my genealogy work down the drain :O
My web building program saves all files to my own computer. So if the web hosts crashes, I can just reload files...I hope. I also have back ups on CD and Flashdrive, but now I'm confused!

I actually have several back-ups, but none on-site--except for an older version of the website before I began rebulding the pages. That back-up is located in a crashed XP sitting next to me, once the "kitty" here is replensished that will be opened up and transferred into the Vista.

I am in the process of doing a complete rebuild of the entire site Vera--it is long overdue and will be doubly helpful for simplifying site navigation and page retrieval. This will be WinterSown.Org v.4 ;-)

Vera, do not keep all your back-ups on site. If you have a fire or flood you lose it all. Thumbnail drives are okay but they get lost.

Trudi, I'm so sorry to hear it. My husband designed our original website for work. So, I have an idea of the effort that's involved in designing websites. We've also had lost reports & forms for work due to a virus. They all had to be rebuilt.

Sorry to hear Trudi, I feel your pain.
Once, way back in the floppy days our family business Mac crashed I had global backups all ready to load up. They were blank! The secretary didn't know that magnets near floppies would erase them. Now, I zip drive em.
At least your a "townie", lol. No Mr. Softie trucks on our hill.
Agree, newer software programs are more user friendly, I waited DECADES for MSWord to be able to add 12 items onto the clipboard, lol.

The file migration is complete and I am back up and running again.
