Can you re-grow from a large psuedostem?

During the hurricanes a couple years ago my large mat of Mysore bananas was severely damaged. I cut them all off (chainsaw!) at about 2 feet high and to my delight they all grew back!

I'm wondering if I can dig a fairly large corm, cut off the psuedostem at 2 feet and replant it successfully. My mat is taking over the yard and I have several garden friends who would like plants but even some of the pups are too large to easily transport.

What do you think?

Yes you can, but make sure you get a generous piece of corm from the mother plant.
But why would you want to cut stems down to 2 feet? Just dig the whole banana up, trim off the lower leaves, and that's all there is to it.

Some of the stems I want to remove are large and too big to fit in a car. Some are going to be almost too heavy to even drag across the yard!

Well it's hard to believe that it was last April that I created this thread. Now it's October and I'm posting a picture of a whole spring, summer and fall of growth. Last year these bananas were no bigger than the palm of your hand when I ordered them. The 2 basjoos are in front, left and right. The left one was overwintered from last year in the ground, stem and all. See pictures at top of this thread. The basjoo on the far right was brought in the house in a pot near the window as insurance in case the one on the left didn't make it. The banana in the center is a dwarf orinoco which was in the house last winter and the one in the center-rear is an ice cream which was also potted in the house last winter. I need to rearrange these bananas so I will be digging them ALL out and storing them in the basement this winter. I'll post pics next spring if and when they get going again.

Thanks again to both of you! I didn't see anything on Craig's list but signed up via the link to Freecycle and BOOM! There was one post for exactly what I was looking for, one for clay and ceramic pots and one for burlap bags. Unfortunately, they were a little dated but I responded to all of them anyway and will ask Michelle to post a "wanted" as well. There were also a couple of posts with offers to come "dig up my yard" from the spring and summer. From now on I'll be keeping my eyes on this website! I did send Abi an email and hopefully she is still available and the ground is "diggable". Thank you both again so much!

I'll keep it going for a bit to see what happens. but it'll be hard to send out seeds if I never get pods. really what's going on is I've come to realize I have 15 more plants than I can reasonably fit in my yard once they're all in their final pots (which is long overdue), and I'm trying to figure out which ones I'm gonna have to get rid of or find a new location for. the weird ones that don't produce pods are obvious candidates for the dumpster. Josh, unfortunately I couldn't get any to germinate. oh well. can't win them all. I still appreciate the effort.

Heard of it? Yes. There have been several discussions on this. One named "organic tomato magic..." is currently running further down the page as is one called "should leaves be taken off tomato plants". Sure you can cut them off. If you cut too low they might grow some pups instead of continuing on the old pseudostem. (it happened to me) Leaving 2 ft should still be ok though, I've cut much lower than that. Of course the higher up you cut the faster it will recover....

I got a single banana division from an overgrown clump of bananas in my yard, the pseudostem was only 4 feet. My old dog chewed it up that pseudostem right to the base! But it came right back up, it wasn't as vigorous as before however and it started producing pups (LOL!) which grew way faster than the original pseudostem. Like already mentioned, make sure it has a good amount of corm so that it can root out.

If you go to the Florida Gardening Forum and check the Conversations page, you'll find my instructions for posting photos. It's easy and fun to be able to share the pictures right in the message. I would recommend you try to limit the number of photos you put into any single message because its hard for people using dial-up connections. 2 or 3 shouldn't pose any problems for them, but more than that and it gets slow.
