I ws stella de oro day lily's last season, the very same way I ws any seed. I know there are a few here who have done the same thing, with other day lily seeds. I used 12oz. bottles, but I won't use those again because it was hard getting the seedlings out after they germinated. If I do any more this season, I'll use either jugs or other kinds of containers. I did not pre-soak the seeds, just popped them into the pre-moistened soil, covered the seeds and put the bottles outside.

Why do they need to be in bottles as opposed to directly in the ground? Is it so you know where they are and what they are?

So, you let a pod go to seed and then what? I've never let a seed pod stay on so I don't know what happens. Do they open up eventually? Are the seeds moist when you plant them or dried up in their pod?

I use little square flats for mine. My last three batches have been true wintersown. Over the weekend I decided to try a batch with summer sowing. I didn't cover the flat though, just left it in semi shade with some chicken wire over it to (barely) protect it from the wildlife. I'll have to water it every day.

I put soil in the flat, poked the seeds in the soil and watered them in. I like to start them in a flat just so I can keep an eye on them. If I just put the seeds in the ground I will promptly forget about them.

Yes, let the seed pods dry on the plant. The seed pods will split open when the seeds are ready. The daylily forum might have some more detailed info on that.

Have you looked at the name of this forum? Its called winter sowing, read some of the FAQ's and you'll get a better idea of what winter sowing is all about.

I haven't had luck WSing special types of DL seed. I have started these more fickle ones in the house and I've also spring sowed some that germinated about 100%
