Is it too late to direct sow annuals?

I just tilled a new flower bed and was hoping I still had time to direct sow some annuals. I have several different amaranths, larkspur, zinnia, cosmos, etc. I'm going to plant out my winter sown seedlings as well but have mostly perennials that won't bloom this year. Do I still have time for annual blooms?

I would think so Joanne. I'm busy preparing for a plant sale which I'm holding this weekend and haven't really had time for the annuals. There are some waiting for me on the deck which I winter sowed, but as I start cleaning some of the garden areas after this weekend, I'll be direct sowing as I go. I still have lots of seeds left and I'd rather not keep them and start fresh next year.

Our season goes late - well into October - and I expect lots of blooms!

Go for it! I'm still running around plunking zinnia and nasturtium seeds here and there, trying to keep ahead of the cutworms which are chowing down on my spring sown annuals. Seems some direct sown seedlings have more of a chance this spring! (Maybe because they take the predators by surprise, instead of being offered as HOS instant dinner!)

Your still a bit early for some. I normally start lettuce every few weeks right up to around October -sometimes November. I am in the thumb. You can always use a cold frame to extend the season. I ve harvested broccoli that was left out in the open as late as February.

Beverly, I sowed some on April 1st, right before we had 5 nights of freezing temps, so they were a little slow to come up. The Bachelor's buttons and Dahlias I sowed at the same time came up much faster. It makes me think that Larkspur likes warmer soil. Penny

Glad to hear it's not too late! Now I just have to keep the %&$# squirrels away long enough for them to sprout.

Do you have to do anything special with the amaranths? I w/s them, but didn't have any germinate at all, I bought three more packets of them and had thought to just try to direct sow, but is there anything special I should know?
Can you direct sow larkspur in the fall? I thought someone here said that was what they did, not here, but on another one of the forums.
I have enjoyed doing this so much, I'm tickled with what has seemed to work out so far.

Thanks for the tip on the larkspur. I'll hold off on them for this year. I had great germination with the different amaranths that were spring sown, they just didn't plant out well for me. Which kind are you sowing?

I spring sowed 3 kinds of amaranths. I have not planted them out yet. They are edible, so everything out there eats them. I think I will just pot mine up and let them get a little bigger. I have Jacob's coat, Oeschberg, and Pygmy Torch. I have others but I never got them planted.

You should be able to direct sow larkspur in the fall or wintersow it. Mine did great when wintersown. Some of them are blooming.

You can borrow my kitty for the squirrels, Big Boy has gone from rabbits to the chipmunks. apparently chippers don't taste good, he just plays them to death and leaves them on the grass.
I dunno what the deal is with cutworms this year, I had to double collar some of my cauliflower to keep them out and this morning I found a cutworm, inside the paper towel ring!
