Can you really grow bananas from seed?

Hi

I would love to have one of those bananas that have purple on the underside of the leaf (name?) and trying to get one in trade is practically impossible since most people want another banana in a trade--and I do not have any. Anyway, since I can't spend a fortune trying to find one locally, it crossed my mind that maybe, just maybe I could try growing one from seed. Is it terribly difficult? I know that in Seattle it would not bear fruit, but that is OK. I would just love to look at it. Any words of wisdom? Thanks a lot
