Williams was not cold tolerant!!

Hi Banana Friends!

Despite I believed that Musa Williams was one of the cold-

hardy bananas, it could not overwinter in the ground even

with the cold protection of wrapping by mats of vegetable

materials. The pseudostem and the rhizome were rotten.

For your information, the lowest tempratures of this winter

were as follows:

Nov. 58F, Dec. 29F, Jan. 30F, Feb. 27F, Mar.sofar30F

On the hand,Rajapuri overwintered perfectly in the same

ground and with the same protection.

You are one of the rare dutch visitors to this forum, and
I do understand why you don't trust any cavendish below
12C/53F.

On the other hand, however, it is interesting to serch
edible species that could grow even in the marginal areas,
and in fact I am growing several bananas inluding Rajapuri,
Dwarf Orinoco, Helen's hybrid, King banana, Williams and
some cavendishes, among which Rajapuri is so far cold
strongest. Musa Basjoo and Sikkimensis are in this case
exceptional as they are always strong enough.

Can you show us what you are growing and what are your
findings?

I feel your back pain but it is very risky. Go to weather.com and enter your city name to get local information. Then click on "monthly" at the top. When the new page displays, scroll down to a graph that shows average annual monthly lows in your city in blue and record annual monthly lows in gray. These numbers should be well above freezing for a plumeria. Plumerias will die if exposed to temperatures at or below 32F. They may suffer injury at temperatures below 40-ish (more or less; watering deeply the night before can help prevent issues; quick dips down and back up are not as bad but are risky) or injury due to late frosts. I touched base with relatives in Greenville and Columbia and they said it was too cold in winter for plumerias. Hilton Head, SC and Savannah, GA were also too cold. See what numbers you get when you enter your city name in weather.com and review the information. The most you can do if planted outdoors is to cover with frost cloth or even sheets (this can be a problem if the plant is too tall) and somehow safely provide a heat source under the cloth/sheets. There is a plumeria obtusa that is native to the US but it only grows in Florida. Typical plumeria USDA Zones are somewhere around 10 or 10B or warmer. Or you could try selling/giving the plants to someone in FL... as long as the person can come and pick them up.

My Banana's (Musa Basjoo) were fine outside this year and came back beautifully. I would say try to keep them above freezing. I did have 2 pups I put in my greenhouse, and they grew slowly all winter. The one outside died back and came back in the spring. My Dwarf Cavendish, I overwintered in the house, will put on my deck over the summer in a pot. I lost a Ice Cream Banana to cold, and none of my EE's made it. So I'm having to change up the EE plan this year. But as long as you don't drop below freezing, you should be fine. We had an unusually cold winter here this year, quite a few nights in the teens and even single digits.

I agree with Dave, personal experience this week hahah... My tender blood orange tree new growth (about 2 weeks old) went flat... the older leaves looked fine... this was Wet, Windy, Cool weather of about 3-5C(40F). The Ponderosa lemon with minimal new growth (has a few flower buds forming) looked great.

I am all for avoiding the news and the aggravation! :-) Have you read Elliott Coleman/s books - Four Season Harvest? I know they have a greenhouse [hoophouse?] on the back of their house, attached. They grow n zone 5 Maine but he has grown in zone 3 before too. His wife Barbara Damrosch is the flower grower in the family. I couldn't find an article on what she might grow in the winter/early spring. Karin, I think a lot of cold hardy annual flowers are winter sown too. It's really doing the same thing you're planning to do, just using milk cartons or similar to just add another layer of protection from cold to speed up the time things start growing. If you are planning to plant directly into the soil in your greenhouse, you could just take plastic gallon milk jugs and cut the bottom off and just cover the seedlings in that way. A little more trouble granted. I buy those large plastic bottles of white vinegar and I'm saving those to make some great caps for early season growing. You can also add gallon bottles of water that will increase the heat in the space. More thermal mass, like bricks on the floor. Elliot Coleman has brick walkways in his. There's a book called. Cool Flowers written by a woman trying to extend her season and she focuses on Hardy Annuals. And there's a long list of hardy annuals to use for winter sowing at this link... Winter Sowing Annuals I just read a reference that said for every layer of protection you add, you add another zone. So a greenhouse - one zone warmer - a hoop house or cold frame [or a milk jug] in a greenhouse - two zones warmer.

Hi

How would this Williams do in somewhere like Kalgoorlie where we do get a heck of a lot of heat but does drop to -2C in winter on a few nights?

Sorry for this late answer.
The trouble with our region is a long wet winter. For a banana a bit of cold is no problem but the amount of water is the trouble here. Most of the plants are killed by too much water or a fungus because of wet conditions.

I moved from the coldest region in Holland to a warmer region. (7b to 8a USDA) But because of gardenweb doesn't recognise a dutch zip-code, I cannot change my profile any more.

About your question:
I have the "normal" bananas for a colder region:
basjoo, sikkimensis, velutina, itinerans, ensete's, Musella Lasiocarpa etc.
And some fruiting species: Dwarf Orinoco, Namwah, Manzano, French Horn, FHIA 23 and 25 and a Grand Naine. The last 3 I overwinter inside my house.
I lost a FHIA 18, Pitogo ans a Zan Moreno due to a grey mold this winter.
The Namwah and Dwarf Orinoco are the strongest here to survive, if you dig them up and store away at ca 5-10 degrees C.

As I had been in Duesseldorf, Germany for some periods, I
do understand the winter situation there in the northern
parts of Europe.

Not only growing them purely as ornamental, but also with
the purpose of freuiting bananas, it would be considerably
difficult, but I think there should be the ways.
For instance, dwarf species can easily be taken into the
house in the winter time to keep them comfortable
conditions enough to prepare blooming in the coming spring.
This is in fact one of the ways I adopted here and it did
work well.
