moss from roundup

Does anyone else get moss in some areas when they use roundup? I 've heard moss grows where the soil isn't very fertile. I have sprayed the area around a couple planting areas and got moss where there wasn't any before spraying. Anyone else had this happen?

Moss is often the advanced guard so to speak. They are often the first to recolonize an area that is devoid of vegetation, and can act as a seedbed for other species. They will however be more likely to persist in infertile but moist areas due to less competition. This probable explains where the ideal that mosses grow in infertile areas.

Eklein -- First off GOOD LUCK! Secondly, It seems I read somewhere that we will likely see the moss grow (assuming it does) in three week cycles. The first change being at week three. There should be some up-shoots starting as the moss changes modes and begins growing and replicating again I cannot remember the name of the life stage for the life of me... It may look like tiny hairs on some species to small stems on others as best I remember. Then in another three weeks (total six), you should notice the moss beginning to "look" like moss as the structure is being redeveloped. After the final three weeks (total nine) you should have a recognizable moss established. (This is assuming all things go well). Also, you may find that not all of the moss will go into the same stages, and some may even begin growing immediately, so by week three you could have some patches of recognizable moss. So, I am looking at 9 weeks as my timetable to determine if I have a chance at success. I will try to track down where I found that at, and post the URL, as well as correct/ammend any incorrect info. Again, that is based off memory, but I feel fairly confident about the three week cycles. And interestingly enough, I read on here that feeding should occur in three week cycles as well if you choose to feed. (I've read between 1/10th strength to 1/4 strength Miracid is all you need to use.) I believe the latter number came from Terrestral_Man (I apologize for botching the spelling) here at Gardenweb.

i would have soaped it up within minutes ... with what i dont know.. and washed it rather roughly ... and then hoped for the best ... i dont know what to tell you now.. other than.. to kill a tree.. i would guess you would need over 50 to 75% coverage.. to dose it well enough for the kill ... [presuming you were using proper dilution rates] hopefully.. you will only have some branch death.. and recovery .. but only time will tell ... by fall you will probably know.. might even take thru next winter ... the only issue.. is whether you can find a replacement cheaply.. and just divest.. and replant.. so as to not guilt your son forever .. lol ... on my 5 acres.. i could ignore this for 3 years.. and 'see what happens' .. but if it is in a prime focal point in a small yard .. and this waiting will drive you insane.. just divest ... the other side of that coin.. is whether you are the science type.. and would love to 'see what happens' .... personality A or B ... its up to you ... i use plenty of RU around here.. when the kids were younger.. it was always an issue.. whether they would walk up.. and try to emulate daddy spraying ... lol ... but the worst was.. the unexpected sneeze.. wherein who knows where that wand might end up when you convulse erratically ... lol i wish you luck ken ps: BTW.. you dont happen to know.. if your RU had a spreader/sticker in it?? it would be on the label ... it might help to call the 800 number on the label.. and ask mosanto what they suggest.. i would be curious ....

The link dated July 1tthe,2005: 2007http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/crypto/msg0716235718221.html?\hey ....as they mentioned about a fungus infection caused from too much water during hot summer over 90Â°F dormant moss...........and the fungus will permanantly kill moss turning it brown .........the only remedy it to throw out brown moss as it will spread. ........and the main culprit of this killer??? Misting/watering the moss during it's dormany period in the hot summer heat (90 degrees F and above) ....and watering moss in 90 degree Â°F that is SUSEPTABLE to hot humid fungus. Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever let my collected wild native moss go totally dry during the REALLY hot summer when moss is in its peaked dormancy...and I always felt bad during a dry heatwave here and there, and have misted/watered my potted moss. My FAVORITE type of miniature "tight-knit" compact native bonsai clump moss here in Massachusetts that is the type that grows between the cracks of rocks and stone walls..... .....and the soil that I favore that I find wild "bonsai-type brtween rocks" compact moss grows in tight clustered in between the cracks on neglected roof tops and rocks/stone walls is the dirt is 'pitch black' soil (with no mulch, no wood chips) dark rich compost like dirt that of a .....out in the summer. Roundup works great for establishing a moss garden. It acidifies the soil and bonds to any clay in the soil causing the clay particles to no longer stick together. These two things become noticeable where Roundup is used extensively. It is actually a good way to make a moss garden since it will provide surface soil conditions that moss likes while also killing any weeds while not harming the moss.

Use it in moderation and at recommended concentrations or less to reduce or prevent any moss problems where you do not want moss growing. If you are spraying around plants that are not acid loving, apply crushed dolomitic limestone from time to time.

Brandon, surely your joking! The other answers make sense.I use it around my mulch rings. We've had lots of rain this past season so that and the roundup preventing grass and weeds, I guess that was what would grow. I like the look actually. I just wondered about how and why it was there. Thanks for the insight.

Bob's right. I have several areas in my garden where I have repeatedly sprayed Roundup over the years and moss is the result. Sure cuts down on the hand weeding for this old man!
Wood chip mulch, and then planted with ground covers, is preferred in most cases though.

I use mulch and groundcovers also. The border between the beds and the yard is usually where it happens. I have a weed yard and there's no seperation of turf and bed. Out in the country with a couple acres the lawn is not a proper lawn.

Moss typically occurs in compacted, overwatered, shady soils, lacking air movement within the soil. Roundup removes any competiton from plant material that can tolerate this conditon. It just means that the conditions have been created for moss. If that is what you want, go for it. If you want to relieve the moss, aerate, add OM, and quit overwatering. If you don't give a hoot, keep it wet and forget it. Keep paying Monsanto for their phytokiller. Don't get me wrong - I use it too, but hate moss. Yes, a moss hater!
