Variegated offsprings. pics

Three or four years ago I wsed some Heliopsis Lorraine Sunshine. Here's a picture of the main plant or as we say in French, 'la piece de resistance!'.

Some of the seeds did not come true, so I got Heliopsis Summer Sun which I truly like as well, and here it is today.

The Lorraine decided to reseed a bit last year and I got two offsprings from it. This is one of them - not sure if the other came back as I'm still looking for it. (Turned the pic, but it didn't take, so kink your neck folks!)

Now this year, the Summer Suns (there three or four plants around that tree trunk) reseeded like crazy. I decided to take some out as I like this plant quite a lot and might make a hedge out of a bunch. Now remember, these have no variegation in them, but in the first photo you'll see some variegation in the front seedling and in the back seedling, and there's another with white markings in the second photo. Not bad, eh?

I think next year if I see seedlings I'm going to let them go a bit longer - at least to the second true leaf stage - to see what will come of them. You have no idea how many of these were turned into the soil!!

I love it!!!! They are so healthy.

I have a few common species Heliopsis and just love the cheery yellow blooms. Another that I planted out from the same batch of seedlings came out with butter-yellow flowers that is really pretty too.
I rec'd some seeds for 'Lorraine Sunshine' this past fall from Limequilla but never got around to sowing them....I think I might just have to summer sow a container now!

Morning Everyone, Ren, I'm having a similar problem with my variegated Steph. It's the heat. The room Steph is in is sunny, 'when we have sun,' and hot. I can't tell you the number of leaves that yellowed/died. Once temps dropped, '60's/low 70's,' foliage stopped yellowing. When temps rose again, 90's, more leaves yellowed and died. Foliage appeared dry. Humidity was high, so dry air wasn't the problem. When I received Steph, it was placed before a west window. Now it's several feet away, and doing better. Then again, temps are cooler. I agree with Al regarding change. Some plants adapt quicker than others, but Steph doesn't fit in that catagory. Liz...Ironically, some variegated plants remain variegated in lower light. I noticed the difference when a few variegated plants were temporarily placed in shade..variegation was more vivid in the shadier spot. Make sense? I believe it depends on plant type. Pothos will remain variegated several feet from a bright window. Moving from one place to another isn't healthy. Find a place your Pothos does well, and let it be. Nikii, look down on this months replies and see what it says about rust. Variegated plants are very prone to it, some more than others, I have never in my 30+ years had this problem with any of them. Ask the experts. Norma

Hey, Mike! That lemon is blooming up a storm! I wish I could smell them! Aha, this must be the Thread with the question, yes?! Thank you for your vote of confidence, but I must second, third, and fourth what the others have said. Do the major sculpting at the start of the growth-season next year. I'd definitely want to get it off of that stake and into its own balance as soon as possible, though. It so happens that I pruned the tips of three branches on my Blood Orange last week. Of course, my weather is warmer than yours, and I'd just brought the tree from the northeast side of my house to the full eastern-southeastern back deck. Lots of new growth already. Josh

It was seeing your pic of 'Loraine sunshine'in a previous post that really sold me on it! I put it on my wish list and started looking for seeds and didn't get any. I finally got some seedlings at the GW swap in London last week. I am very excited...I have the plain heliopsis and love it, but I really love the look of the variegated leaves and the bright sunny yellow blooms of 'Loraine'!
Any idea of how many will come true to the mother plant? Does it seem that the majority come up plain green? I would hate to give any away, when I finally do get them to flower and seed, and not have them come true for anyone.
As usual, Tiffy your pics are great and I look forward to more.

Mine seem to re-seed all over and I never know when a Summer Sun or a Lorraine Sunshine is going to pop up. If you love suprises, this plant is for you.

Oh, I love suprises and my germination of variated from seed is about 50-75% varigated.

You have to sow some. They are a great plant. No fuss with these. Pest and disease resistant. What more could a gardener want? ( I just can't believe you have seeds you haven't sown. :O)

Thanks Carrie. This is a plant you should try too. In your zone I'd probably give it a bit of shade since it does pout in hot midday sun sometimes.

Glad you got some. Bakemom is right about more than 50% of the offsprings coming up with variegation. Make sure you tell folks that they should wait for a second set of true leaves before they make a decision on them.

I'll have to look for the story on Lorraine. Sounds interesting.

This for me was quite the surprise Bakemom. I never thought that the offspring of the solid greens would have any variegation. Love it!

glad that we can count on that much success with the variegation. I just went to look at the seven tiny (1-2") seedlings that I was given, and only one of them is showing plain green leaves on the last set of leaves to come out. The rest are all showing variegation so far. The other seedling that I got is larger, approx. five or six inches and bushy so it is 'safe' I guess as it is all variegated. (YAY!)
I will definitely collect seeds when it does flower and feel fairly safe in assuring that it is 'likely' to produce true to its parent.

I find it fascinating when plants cross like that especially the highly variegated one in the 3rd photo. I'd like to see what the bloom on that one looks like. It is the most unique of the lot as far as the leaves are concerned.

Your Lorraine Sunshine looks beautiful. I have tried 2 years to ws it but no luck.
My Summer Sun plants have been great but have not self sown. Probably because I use a thick mulch for the winter.
