What would you choose - Lisbon or Eureka lemon?
Comments (6)Lisbon lemons are slightly smaller than Eurekas and have a noticeably thicker skin that is smoother (making it nicer for zesting). I think Lisbon lemons are juicier and, overall, less seedy (but that depends on the exact clone of "Lisbon" versus "Eureka"). The Lisbon tree has more thorns than the Eureka. Also, fyi, 'Meyer' isn't a true lemon and it will produce well everywhere. Eureka and Lisbon will produce lots of fruits everywhere but they develop thick, somewhat bitter skins in cool climates (such as SWGB Zones 15, 16, 17; maybe where you are) and the flesh doesn't sweeten up as well with cool summers, cool winters. Have you tasted fruit off of a true lemon tree in your neighborhood? Joe...See MoreVariegated Eureka Lemon Advice?
Comments (2)I would not prune right now. Let the tree try to adjust to the re-potting. See how it does and how many leaves it drops over the next 3 to 4 weeks. One of the things you can do if you like, is to weight down one of the other branches (not the larger one) so that it is parallel to the ground. That way, it will cause new apical stimulation, and you'll see leafing and branching along the nodes facing upward. A nice tricky way to stimulate new growth on the smaller side. Comments (17)Hi Littleluey! So you want to take them to the next level? I can tell you that if you follow Patty's advice, you will get there. I personally can only grow mine in containers and they are treated entirely different than in-ground. I only use Fish Emulsion to encourage pest free trees and vinegar to keep my water solution on the acidic side at almost every watering. Kari: The dosage on the FE bottle for foliar sprayer is quite safe if applied very early in the am or after the hottest part of the day. Sorry for a delayed response:-) Mike...See MoreEureka lemon lost its leaves after it fruited, see phases
Comments (8)Steve, I really hope that with being an in ground tree, it will eventually be a success in the end. Love your little kumquats : ) Laura, good eye! The mangos still have a few months before they mature and they are so big already. I hate that you have to be so cautious about your Glen mango plans. I always feel so bad that all dedicated gardeners can't have similar climate/weather year round for their gardening heart's desire! Argh, on another note, it is a shame that I had cut all the lemons off because those too were SO big! See pics: Silica, thank you for your response. I became really concerned when all of the leaves dropped. It definitely looked unhealthy with these huge lemons but with bare branches. John, thank you for your response. Every now and then, I have seen tiny (super tiny) little black critters on the underside of the leaves. Someone suggested I use some neem oil to keep them away. I just bought some over the weekend and I'll read the instructions for application tonight....See Moremeyermike_1micha
