What have you known from the disaster in CA?

Hello the bananafans in CA!

I deeply sympathize with you all who suffered from the

recent disaster.

Knowing it is quite difficult to tell the influences on

the plants, depending on the different circumstances and

the locations, but could you tell us your findings and

observations about the cold hardiness of the bananas you

grow? As everybody know that Basjoo, Sikkimensis, Velutina

and Chinese Yellow are quite cold hardy, also tell us how other species like CA.Gold, Rajapuri, Orinoco, Ice

cream etc. tolerated against the disaster.

Well - I guess if you have an avacodoe or orange grove maybe it was a disaster, but for me it was just an inconveniance.

Out where I live it was subfreezing from about 10-11pm to 7am every night for a week. We had one night where it hit 21 degrees (cold enough to freeze our water pipes) and one night down in the upper 20's.

My small goldfinger (3-4 feet tall) was frozen down to the ground. It looks like the corm is just fine and appears to be pushing up new growth. Also a small 2-4 foot apple lost about 1/2 it's pseudostem - I see some new leaf trying to push up, but we've still been down in the upper 30's to low 40's at night so it's struggling.

My big ice cream (7-8 feet tall) lost maybe the top 6-8 inches of stem, it's starting to push out new leaves as well.

I have tried to grow these from seed, but with no luck. They have a very short shelf life! I don't have anything on your list, I have quite a few pre-bonsai if you are interested in a trade. Thanks, Jeff

I wish I would have known how much fun they are to have around. I would have had them sooner. Not over feeding them grain is important. You can kill them with kindness...and they are pretty convincing when they tell you they are starving. I have a dozen goats of various breeds and ages and mine free range with no problem. They are a friendly group and the first few weeks I stayed with them and walked with them where they were allowed to be. Now they have their own routine. I still need to walk out back with them to get them out of the barn, but once they start eating I can slip away without them following me. They seem to keep the same routine everyday...browsing their favorite spots in the same order....finishing with the pine trees then back to the barn. One thing I do keep in mind now, is that when I am purchasing a goat, I make sure they have been handled and are used to people. They are just easier to handle when you do need to get ahold of one for hoof trimming or whatever. Have fun! Carrie

As a 9 year old kid in Elk City, OK in 1950, I met Tim Holt, Fuzzy Knight & Randolph Scott who were some of my favorite cowboy movie stars that made personal appearances at a local movie theatre. And, during our town's 50th. anniversary in 1951 I met & shook hands with Jess Willard who had been the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, 1915-1919. He lived in my hometown during the early days & helped lay the bricks that paved Broadway St. and are still there and "in use" now in 2006! Moving ahead several years and after I had moved to PA...my wife & I saw Richard M. Nixon as he arrived by helicopter and dined at the then-famous Bookbinder's Restaurant in Philadelphia one evening while we were eating dinner there also. Then later, during the mid-1970's, we saw "The Duke" John Wayne in New York City getting out of his limousine and greeting the gathering crowd at Rockefeller Center. Guess that's about it... LarryD

My opinion on pot fillers. If the pot is too heavy to carry to the stove when the water is cold, I sure don't want to carry it to the sink when the water is boiling. For the effort/cost I don't need one. YMMV, though. I wish I had run my layout by gardenweb members for feedback. I wish I would have thought about a pull out cutting board. I haven't had one for about 30 years and had adapted. Would really like to have one again. The matt white Formica shows every speck of everything! Good, because I can wipe it off right away. Bad because if I haven't wiped it off right away everyone can see it. I live on a gravel road. I rarely use my a/c. Windows are open all the time. The FX stuff I originally planned might have been a better choice. Maybe next time. I do like the look of the white, though. I really hate my upper diagonals but I also hate the blind corner cabs. The more complicated pull down/out doesn't appeal to me. Problem still not solved. I don't like what I have but I don't like the other choices. I thought and thought about this and only came up with the three "I wishes", so all in all, my kitchen turned out pretty good. I am more than delighted to have the peninsula gone and every time I think about my new kitchen I suspect my face has the orgasm expression.

goldfinger, saba, blue java all came through with top leaves frozen. Mysore seems to be a lot more sensitive and had to be trimmed back severely, but new pups coming up. I was about to give up on Kru and red lhoene anyway but they had to be taken down to the corm. Cardaba did ok but was in a much better location so don't know it's sensitivity. Manzano froze back to ground in spite of better protection.
Blue java and goldfinger bananas have turned yellow and are edible, but clearly not the same quality of fruit as before. One stalk of mysore is starting to turn but i'm waiting to see what it will do, but the other bunch is smaller and looks as if it will wither.

Hello Bananafans in CA!

Unfortunately nobody posted how Rajapuri and Dwarf Orinoco
endured the CA disaster.
Could anyone report on this subject please? and if possible
also on Helen's hybrid.

I have a non-dwarf orinoco which had very little damage however it is sheltered on the north by the neighbor's garage and a very large lemon tree and swimming pool on the south side. The tops froze down to the roofline of the garage. I suspect that this speaks more to the protection than to plant hardiness.
