Thuja Occidentalis 'Emerald Green' in AZ?

Hi...Does anyone know if Thuja Occidentalis "Emerald Green" Smaragd can be grown in Phoenix? It would be the perfect privacy hedge for a long wall I have. Thanks.

Not too well, unfortunately! According to Sunset, T. occidentalis cultivars will happily handle some heat, but with good constant humidity. A solid desert summer would make them VERY unhappy

Thank you for the advice. I am now considering "Shiny Xylosma" and will trim it as a formal hedge to about 10' high and 3-4' deep. It appears to do well in the Arizona heat.

searched the whole web.. eh??? after ten years.. my GG is 20 feet tall ... from a 4 incher planted ... after ten years.. my smargard.. emerald green ... is 6 feet tall from a 4 footer planted ... try googling green giant for it latin name ... and then add: annual growth rate... and then google for emerald green latin.. and add the same.. and you should find.. one grows 2 to 5 feet per year.. and the other 6 inches or so ..... depending on your climate.. you better have a pretty big yard for GG's ... and on either.. INSURE you buy single leader plants ... welcome to GW.. glad to help .. come back often .... ken ps: the latin names are VERY IMPORTANT.. its where you start all searching .... trust me.. i fought them for years.. lol ...

Hand picking bags now is an effective and easy control measure (if the plants aren't too tall yet!). But it is also easy to overlook a bag or two, and that's all it takes for another infestation. In our area, bagworms hatch in late May, roughly, and can be spotted and sprayed in early June, usually. At that time they are very easy to kill, use sevin, BT, or other labelled products. Where do they come from? That is a very good question that has never been satisfactorily answered for me. They can and do "go for walks" in their bags, but I have seen them show up in isolated beds of junipers, far from any potential batch of bags. One time a county agent made an offhand comment that he thought they might hitch a ride on birds. When I asked him later to elaborate on that, he vehemently denied any such thing... Bottom line - a very easy pest for us to control, I wish all horticultural pests were so easy. brian

Dax, I started with a 6-12" 'Van den Aker' in May, plant had a "production" problem in the nursery I was told, and died at my house, then got replaced with that 5ft one. It seems to me that those Cedars grow in a cool spring in the PNW, and then after 8 day truck ride to NY get planted in June and hit suddenly with several days at 96 F - and get a heat stroke. So that needs the shade now and seems to like it. You are right when I would have been able to plant it in April. When this 'Van den Aker' dies too, then I will try it again next year, but will insist on shipping via air and planting in April. Or I will order it from my nursery which gets shipment from Iseli. I think many conifers grow very slowly. Pine trees are the exception. They grow very fast. You may consider those, but they are wayyyyyy more than 20ft. Another fast growing conifer is the Witchita Blue Juniper. It will get 4-8 ft wide and 15-20 ft tall. If you plant them, make sure to plant 4 feet next to each other. It can be used as a screen or a windbreak and will need no pruning. It also has appealing color. Goodluck with what ever you choose.

Xylosma is a good plant; it may not look too great in a nursery can, but once it's in the ground, BOOM! Will look ratty in the winter and may drop a lot of leaves after a hard frost; bounces back in spring

Jim Hyland, a tree expert at "allexpert.com" wrote the following re Emerald Green in Scottsdale...

"You should not have a problem with this tree in Scottsdale as long as it does not dry out. Make sure the hole that they are planted in is about twice the size of the root ball and fill with good top soil, water and mulch with not more than 3 inches of mulch for moisture retention."

It's obviously not a low maintenance tree as it will need to be watered on a regular basis but sounds like it will do okay in Scottsdale.
