You have a wide variety of trees mentioned here. Adams is a full-sized tree, 25X25Ft with outstanding foliage and beautiful pink flowers. Coralburst is a compact growing tree but will obtain a size of 12X12FT or greater in time. The branches of this tree will become covered in light pink flowers. There are few trees the shape of Coralburst and they are very impressive over time. Sugartyme is pure white but a fullsized crab as well. Prairiefire is perhaps, one of the very best crabs you can purchase with an intense, almost electric red color and dark foliage. They are usually available and worth driving to purchase if you can find one. I will tell you that they are also very large and will obtain at least 25X25FT or greater in size. I would look at your site and determine the size crab that you want that will fit your yard. While most crabs are large trees as mentioned above, there are smaller varieties as well. Camelot is a 10X10FT crab and a beautiful pink. Candymint is a smaller crab as well. I have two of them in Maine and they both bloom profusely with a peppermint candy colored flower. They also have a downward sweeping form and will fit smaller yards. Tina is in the same league as Prairiefire. It obtains a 10X15FT size, wider than tall and will become absolutely covered in thick, white, flowers. One of the best. Goodluck with your decision.

If it's a spontaneous, self-sown seedling then it's not an existing named cultivar, unless it's the result of apomixis (production of clonal fruits, without pollination - something other rose family trees such as hawthorns and mountain ashes indulge in part of the time). If it's a sucker then it will be the same as whatever tree makes up the rest of the roots. Grafted trees will have different kinds making up the tops and roots. Specimens raised from cuttings and therefore on their own roots will consist of a single variety. Some specimens may consist of three different varieties - a rootstock, an interstem between, and a scion - the last being the one with branches, leaves, flowers and fruits being allowed to develop. If the parent specimen is a wild species rather than a garden hybrid, and the seedling is pure (rather than the result of crossing with other, different kinds of crabs nearby) then it will qualify for being called a member of that species.

"Spring Snow" supposedly has single blossoms? At least, according to what I've read. Besides, the tree I'm trying to identify is definitely an upright/inverted cone variety. It's not nearly as wide or tall as most crabapples I've seen. The tree was already in place when my friend moved into her home, so she too is unfamiliar with the cultivar. The fruit is red, approx. 1/2" and persistent. I've not seen another one like it. When I look at the tree, it's most striking characteristics are the deep magenta buds followed by the prolific display of flowers - which definitely have a pinkish-red tint to the outer petals. I would be convinced it's an Adirondack, except for the double blooms and persistent fruit.

Thanks for all the info, lpittman8. The native crabs evolved along with CAR... I've never noticed any significant impact on fruiting... but I'll also admit that I've not really looked all that closely. Good to know. Nearby mayhaws are HEAVILY infected with the cedar(juniper)-hawthorn strain of the fungus... I'd been thinking about getting a mayhaw, but now maybe not now. :) Serviceberries seem to be spared so far this year, but some years, in some locations I've seen serviceberry fruits reduced to masses of fungal fruiting bodies... I planted a serviceberry about 6 years ago, and it was always heavily affected. So, I chopped it down a couple of months ago. :) I also had a couple of quince trees—both were heavily affected, and one died a couple years ago. same for some pear varieties I saw in a pear orchard back home in AL, We have a couple of pear trees, and I think they have fireblight, but not this fungus we're talking about. i don't have time or inclination to spray anything, and i'm probably not going to invest the time to clean-up/remove infected leaves on the ground, either. I probably won't either then. If they still bloom, that's good enough for me. I don't necessarily care about the fruit per se. The M.angustifolias only produce fruits that deer will find appealing; if you want something YOU can enjoy, I'd replace them with a good 'edible' crab... especially if you're limited for space. I'm not really limited for space, but I'll keep that info in mind in case I want to plant any more crabapples. Thanks again for all your help. I'm glad I can just stick with the status quo for now. My 2 crabapples are approaching 5 feet (I said 3 feet in my original post, but I was mistaken), so hopefully they'll bloom next year.
