Summer sowing: What have you had success with?

Is it too late to sown annuals for this year? How about perennials such as larkspur, foxglove, english daisy, calamint and the like?

Wanted to see what you guys did before I did anything. Not that I am afraid to try. I just direct sowed some basil (regular and cinnamon), sweet marjoram and oregano last night.

The two nights before, I was planting out my WS perennial babies. 32 containers in all, and I have about a dozen containers of perennials and about a dozen more containers of annuals to go be planted out. Believe it or not, my holding beds has enough room for the rest of the perennials.

A lot of work, but worth it. Which is why I want to sow more plants! ADDICTION!!!!!!!!

I summer sowed quite a few things for my shade garden last year with success. I'll have to dig out my garden journal for the list but do recall the following:

balloon flower
astilbe
goat's beard
bleeding heart
tiarela
heuchera
rodgersia
symphandra
oakleaf hydrangea
red vein enkianthus (sp)

I think I mixed a few sun lovers in there as well but can't recall what they were. I'll try to locate my journal this weekend and update the list. Good luck!

I dug up some carrots yesterday because the greens were turning black and rotting from the rain. They were big under the ground though. Big--like 7 inches. What's going to happen if all the greens rot. Will the carrots still grow underground? I would love it they could continue to grow bigger. My onions are huge and beautiful. Since they grew so big from all the rain, I'll prolly have them last until next summer. Last year they were so small, they hardly lasted through early winter. They were pitiful and small. All the brassica is producing except for one deformed cauliflour head. Not one single cabbage worm this year. I gave up on my tomatoes and low and behold I started getting red ones this week. Since I got blight, I am happy for atleast some. They are super late and its a race now with the rain and time. Will I be able to pick more soon or will the fungus take them over before I could eat them? It's like playing the lottery. Cukes are growing big from all the rain. It's time to do a test dig of the potatoes and see if they're still alright under all that dirt. I am hoping the rain has made them big as whoppers this year. Leeks are reacting to the excess rain like the onions. I was told they would only get pencil size but they are fat like my thumbs. String beans are out of control producing 3 lbs per week. So far the only diseases is the blight tomatoes. Even the Jap beetles went away prolly due to all the rain. Some zuchini is still coming in but production has slowed and the slugs are back so got to keep laying the Sluggo regularly. All in all, the excess rain is actually helping the yield this year, except for the toms. Plus I hardly need to water and that saves the pump from running hours per day. Do I want more rain? NO. Please make it stop. We have no summer and only used the pool once this year so far. How much worse can it get?

Not the best photo of Joe Pye since it was taken after a tropical storm last fall, but you can see that the plant does have standing power. Some blooms reach beyond our livingroom window so it's nice to see the butterflies and the birds which visit. The same one just a few days ago. Oh, and yes, this plant was winter sown. The blooms are lavender and the leaves run from a deep green to burgundy along the edges. I also have a 'Baby Joe' which reaches 4 feet as opposed to the one above which can reach 8 feet. In my gardens you will also find Chocolate Joe Pye which is the one with burgundy leaves and white flowers. It grows to about 4 to 5 feet. If I were you, and I had enough seeds, yes, I would try to SS some and then keep others for WSing. :O)

I posted earlier about Tranquil Waters... a GREAT plant. I grow a few more Stamiles' on this thread right now. Here's my take: ABSOLUTE TREASURE- Gorgeous flower. Major rust magnet in my garden. I love the bloom and keep the plant, but I wouldn't recommend it based on the rust-magnet factor. I have several Stamile plants within touching distance and they are regularly unaffected. DRUID'S CHANT - Grows right next to ABSOLUTE TREASURE in my garden and is alway vigorous. I divided it in July (we've had a drought this year) and didn't do anything special to the pieces I put back in the ground. They look like they were never disturbed. Great plant - I highly recommend it! ALL FIRED UP - Amazing plant. Even though I'm not fond of oranges, this is one of my favorite plants year after year. Great blooms, great foliage, great plant. BLUEBERRY FROST - Almost tossed this one last year. I've had it for 3-4 years and it never did much. This summer, WOWEEWOW! Even though we had a pretty bad drought, BLUEBERRY FROST was an amazing performer. RAINBOW EYE - much nicer now that I've moved it to a place where it gets some afternoon shade. In all-day sun, it has a tendency to scape-blast in my garden. I was going to get rid of all of it last summer - dug it and didn't do anything with it. Last December, I planted it in my garden (it had been on my back porch in a grocery bag since July) and said,"if you live, you live." I told myself that I would sell it all at my Daylily Club's public sale (July 2007) if it lived. It was so pretty in its new spot that it never made it to the public sale. :) LAVENDER RAINBOW - What a great plant! Beautiful blooms, great plant habit. I love this one! CHANCE ENCOUNTER - Lovely and vigorous. LET LOOSE - I didn't think I would like Spiders - this one changed my way of thinking. I needed tall and yellow so I took a chance. It is currently the only thing blooming in my garden, although WILD AND FREE (Stamile), has put another scape. I love-love-love this plant!! CERISE MASTERPIECE - I brought this one home from the Stamile garden last April. It is a magnificent plant. Tall scapes, large blooms, amazing color. It was the first plant I ever spent $150 for and I don't regret it for a nanosecond! There are several others, but this post is long enough!! Meg :)

Good Morning, Kathy - My WS list from last year is on 'my page'. It's in alpha order. I believe I started most of my veggies later in the season Feb/March because I spent a good part of the early winter planting all those flowers. Unfortunately, I didn't yield a high rate of fruit because the trees around my veggie garden have grown considerably! The rabbit-loving lettuce and spinach went on the deck in full sun and just thrived. From all the advice I've read over in WS'ing, as a rule of thumb, it's best to start your annuals later in the season. I'm not sure what to make of this crazy weather we have been having!! I've read a lot of reports about sprouts already that I don't recall reading last year. I recorded the plant date and what did/did not germinate. When I went though it, it appeared that the things that I sowed in Dec had a lower success rate. However, when I compared my data to other folks' lists, there didn't seem to be any correlation to the plant date. I held off through the holiday season and just started putting my pots out now. IÂm doing my perennials first.

ummmm can ya tell that i like fragrance?? the only one's that arent fragrant i got as bonus's!! LOL i did see that on another site i really do want the trailing carnations!! they have some kinda black thingi in them!! WOA BABE!!!! so later if someone wants to trade something for them!! i so want to!! LOL i right now have sweet william!! they are so great smelling and garlic chives and very fresh!! LOL HEE HEE HEE YES an addict!!! LOL ~MEDO

I received an extra from a trade oregano seeds marked the year 2000, I figured now or never, rigth? They were burpee seeds, I think, it that neat sealed package. It'll be kewl if they sprout! I sowed them all and covered it with some plastic wrap to make sure they dont dry up. If they grow, Im right a letter to them saying nice things.

I also did some extra cosmos and zinnias, some more delphiniums, chrysanthemums and others.

I've summer sown Bay Laurel, Gardenia, Primulas, and Heliotrope.
I'm probably going to try doing more Primulas this year (I overwintered the ones I did last year and they bloomed indoors this Spring, which was nice :-)
I'm also planning on doing some Alyssum Saxatile also. What I thought was that in my yard turned out to be Painted Daisies (duh).
I also have taken advantage of all the fresh fruit in season this time of year by sowing any of the rotted or moldy ones. Being set outside, the mold seems to just dissipate. I've got Blackberries and Strawberry plants from doing that in the past. Hasn't worked yet for me with Cherries :-(

just wait, the cherries will be up next year!! give it time, remember where you threw them out. :')) i have a special place i throw all my seeds, so if they come up i'm happy!! and i know its not weeds, just the grass comes up, LOL and i'm getting to know the weeds. HEE HEE

I usually pick some kinda seed that's tropical and not easy for a new gardener like me to start and summer sow them. That's how I got my Bay Laurel and my Gardenia. I have seeds for Phormium (probably didn't spell that right) and Cordyline (which I absolutely LOVE) that I'm going to summer sow if I can bear the thought of failure...lol. I've grown a bit chicken lately, despite the fact that 98 percent of my garden is Winter Sown. Must be a newbie-relapse (lol).
